Tallest building in town, can you name the city?

This 11 story high rise dominates the skyline of this city that had a population of 50,000 during its heyday. In the early 70's, municipal leaders gave the green light to close the main drag and allow a three block enclosed mall to be built which led to many buildings being razed for the project. The mall eventually failed and was demolished over two decades ago and the city is attempting to replace numerous vacant downtown lots with new construction but it has been a slow process.
Muskegon, MI :)

Hooray! Was it that difficult because I felt that I gave a reasonable amount of clues?

This Portland sized city previously known for its rail and canal connections is in a state that obviously does not require front plates which will narrow the search down to only 21 possibilities. The nearby regional airport is the second busiest in the state when measured by air traffic but this municipality is not in the name and has nothing to do with the marketing or operations of the facility. The 10 story building in the center is the tallest commercial structure downtown by only a few feet.

My first guess was Wabash, Indiana, of Cannonball fame, but the airport clue doesn't line up.

No, but another clue: This city is located 845 highway miles from Savannah which should help narrow it down!
Nice one!
The picture made me think Midwest for some reason, and that fit your follow up mileage clue... Indiana was the first midwestern state on the list alphabetically of states not requiring a front license plate...
The "measured by air traffic" made me think this was a "big" clue, and got thinking of a flight school of some sort, which brought me to Purdue Univ, which has it's own airport ...
Which as a sports fan I knew was in Lafayette, IN ... and ... that's my answer
("commercial structure" is also a sneaky clue  )

Great job um 1990 and the proper use of clues makes the challenge much more interesting.

The 11 story building on the left is the tallest in this border city's downtown which is larger than Portland in population and is the third biggest in the state. This former hotel is slated to be renovated into apartments in the near future. Was once a gateway to the wild west and is one of the most uninspiring, nondescript towns that I've ever visited even though it did have a welcoming feel to it.

Too many good clues on this one, I'm gonna abstain :)

When considering municipalities with fewer than 100K people, this city just about has it all when it comes to museums, recreation, vibrant downtown, modern 10,000 seat arena and convention facilities. The only downfall is that the airport really sucks for a city of its size with regional jet service by one airline and to one destination as the only option. The tallest building in the center rises to 159 feet though there a half a dozen other structures that are within a few feet of claiming the title including the glass tower to the right.

Is it the Cross Lines Tower in Kansas City, Kansas?

It is not but you are in the right part of the country. Also, the name of the building is not important, determining the city it is located in is what we're looking for. And welcome to the forum fellow new member! :)

Why'd we skip this one? It's Fort Smith, Arkansas. I cheated but only because I'm a completionist and didn't want it to get lost to the dust bin of history. No idea what the next one is from Post 213, but won't cheat as long as nobody tries to jump ahead...

Two for two DZH22! Did you pick up on the airport clue (SUX) for Sioux City? I think um 1990 had Fort Smith figured out but was being courteous by allowing other members to participate.

I didn't pick up any clues. It was just the first name that popped into my head and then I searched that city name under google images. I had to use quotes "sioux city" and "-falls" because it kept showing me Sioux Falls pics instead. It was a wildly lucky guess that I then confirmed through the images.

Here's one. Good luck everybody. (it couldn't possibly be any easier)
