To state that it depicts the midnight ride(s) of Paul Revere is ludicrous, if not insulting. That would be better suited for the cover of a Molly Hatchet album.

I love it.

Pretty much all the mural programming on that wall is intentionally overly colorful and over-the-top. It's all meant to be contemporary and to push the envelope, and it works to liven up an otherwise pretty dreary square.

I see this piece as a mashup of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's Liberty Enlightening the World and Franz Marc's Blue Horses and Cyrus Edwin Dallin's Equestrian State of Paul Revere, all depicted in modern graffiti style medium.

A more "traditional" depiction of Paul Revere's ride would be a huge miss here.

Do I think it's a reasonable work for the Greenway? Sure, why not.

Do I think it would look sick airbrushed on the side of an old van? Hell yeah I do.

Does it have anything to do with Paul Revere? No.

Be careful with murals in a large or prominent city. I know enough about this form of expression as I managed a large mural project with one of more dynamic mural artists in the country.

And it was not this one below, thank God. This was in the early stages of A.I. image generation and as you can see, it didn't have a grasp on human fingers and how things would be held (especially drinking glasses). This one is next door to the Portland ME museum of art. They have a $100 million dollar addition on the way next to this mural (currently on the wall of a lobster bake joint), and I'm hoping this mural oddity gets painted over. Simply depicting feel-good imagery is not enough. Hire a real artist.

I mean, considering that Greenway murals have what, an 12-18 month lifespan? Most murals anywhere are up way longer than that. It's functionally a rotating display - impermanence is part of the deal here, and it will get replaced next summer. Not everything that's gone up here has been successful, but that's ok because we'll get something new.
