General Portland Discussion

MECA&D is looking to restore the ground level Congress St facade, which I think could be a good thing if done right. Do any of you know when the existing canopy was added? Any photos of what it looked like prior?

I found this photo that must depict a pre-expansion version of the building.

That’s from the Portland Landmarks page- https://www.portlandlandmarks.org/meca

Maine Memory has a photo from 1912 on this page-

Personally, I'm a big fan of the mid-century stuff (and I love that older lettering in the second photo) and wish it would stay!

That’s awesome!! Well done Portland! Seriously so happy to see how well done this is. So many core memories will be made here for those kiddos. Glad they have a cool place to go outside the house this summer. Great work by the City- now please maintain it!

Someone said it’s the old Jordans Meat foundation that you can see in the picture.

Seems likely.

I know they won't, but it would be nice if they would install a fountain at the India St. end, similar to the one Jordan's had. You can see the vestiges of it inside the hedge circle in that last pic.

Also, oooh! The sign for the U.S. Garage! I remember that (although I never knew exactly where said garage was, just that it was down the hill)!
