Portland International Jetport | PWM

Agree and the jetport director sent it to me today and it is for general guidance understanding that changes to equipment do happen on occasion. Not sure of how often the service chart is updated but Gates 12 and 14 have only been active for around a year.

Apron layout showing all 14 gates at PWM. Paul mentioned that it needs a few updates as this one was completed in September 2025 and he also shared that construction of the 4th deicing pad has just been completed.

138' is really quite odd for a apron box - it's substantially larger than Group III, yet not big enough for any of the group IV aircraft other than the 757. I'd chalk it up to legacy things, but that's still narrower than most 707s and DC8s wanted and those gates were only built in the 90s.

Anyways, PWM has only seen a relative handful of 757 ops in the 21st century - FAA numbers say exactly 56 passenger operations since 2000. Back of the envelope math says that you could have taken that extra 18ft from those 2 extra gates and with a little repainting created a single proper common use group IV gate - depending on wingtip spacing that'd have given PWM the ability to accept 767s. Not that there's a point right now to do so, or generally - new Group IV aircraft are uncommon - so to accommodate future widebody traffic you'd probably want to go straight to a Group V gate.

Correct, but Delta did use them daily in the late 90's with flights to CVG and if I remember correctly one flight actually originated in BGR and another one stopped in ALB. This was a big deal for Portland at the time and was also prior to the runway being extended to 7200'.

PWM enplanement numbers are out for July with a total of 326,568 which is a gain of 11,211 over July of 2025. This now puts the annual passenger count on par with last year's record numbers and I'm going to predict a 2% gain overall which is very healthy especially with the NYC area issues earlier in the year.

You are correct Mark. And due to Delta's Gate 8 being unavailable due to the apron construction, we had to back taxi both outbound and inbound which eliminated the 10 minute early arrival bonus yesterday. The terminal was extremely busy with the baggage claim area maxed out which is why a fourth carousel is definitely needed during the peak seasons.

I was told that the inbound flights from LAX and SFO are consistently full but the outbound flights from PWM are still doing well but not at the same level as the arrivals which seems a little odd unless Maine is gaining some new residents.

Coming from San Francisco and the West, everything is so spread out and takes hours to get anywhere. When we visit the East, we typically visit both Portland and Boston because of the proximity. The optionality (number of flights and time options) into and out of Boston results in us using both airports (into Boston and out of Portland the last time). And we get to ride the Downeaster :)

I wonder how things will go going forward, as we transition from the time of year where people would want to escape the heat of LA and SF to come to Maine, into the time of year when we start think about heading to warmer places!

I lived in LA for a considerable amount of time. One summer I lived in Venice Beach, and I swear the entire summer it didn't get above the low 70s (from a dreaded marine layer). But then go up a canyon road in Malibu to a mountain top and the sun breaks through and its in the 80s. And go inland a few miles and it's in the 80s. Downtown and the valley, 90s. Palm Springs, 110 to 120. The even taller mountains 2 hours away? 50s. Pick your climate. Northern CA is a whole different climate animal and SF is not hot. The summer daily temperature mean is colder than Portland. In July it's 60.3 degrees and Portland? 70.4, so considerably warmer in Portland, Maine during the summer.

My guess is the timing of the flights being Saturday only. People may be opting to fly in on Saturday but going to Boston to fly home if Saturday>Saturday doesn't work for their trip.

I think the flights from PWM to LAX and SFO are now departing on Sunday morning and are parked overnight which might be a factor in the outbound load factors.

Interesting: I just noticed that, at least for SFO on the 12th, the outbound flight has been changed to Sunday morning the 13th. Inbound, it's still an all day affair getting in late in the afternoon Saturday.

Edit: Jinx!
