I wonder if the new Munjoy South owners will try to jump in and get some office space into their eventual redevelopment of the site. Some low income apartments must be available until 2042, but that's a huge site ready for some investment.
RIP 'cheap' evening parking lot. I see the garage across the street went up to $5/hr from $3.50/hr almost in concert with this development. Although it is good to see this lot being put to better use than surface parking.
It's interesting to see the renderings of a super-sized building beside the Time and Temperature building given the recent news that the latter building is under foreclosure, with an occupancy rate of only 60%.
I think I prefer the Avesta building and its weird blue to the phone company buildings across the street. The one at the corner of Forest Ave at least has some art deco touches going on. But that big concrete and brick windowless brutalist thing is one of the most horrific buildings in the city.
Does "Keep Portland Livable" actually have a case against Federated's original plans? I don't get why they backed down instead of fighting the suit. I think the thoughts of Peter Monro, et al should be heard at a planning meeting like everybody else's, but I don't understand how they have now...
Well, great news! Now it's going to look... just like it looks now. Which is an ugly hole in the ground that nobody cared about until it was sold to the hotel developer.
I wonder if this group will try to block Bayside revitalization next.
It's amazing how well the Courtyard hotel fits in with the existing buildings. When I approach Portland from the bridge it just blends in with everything else. As an added bonus, from some angles it blocks the horrific green cupolas on top of the Custom House parking garage.
Unfortunately, most of the peninsula sidewalks are treated by third parties with very wildly different degrees of success. One block will be spotless and nicely salted while the next is a ice rink. It is predicable after every storm. Even though there are certain areas that the city tries to...
Ugh. I'd love to know what about this project keeps Portland from remaining a "great small city." Certainly the land's current use as empty lots and a municipal snow pile are not adding any positive value to the city's character.
I hope they choose a design that leaves the pedestrian refuge zones in the middle of Franklin. I keep hearing how difficult it supposedly is to cross as a pedestrian, but I can usually get across at Marginal Way or Congress St in under a minute thanks to the center medians. (Yes, I ignore the...
Walking down Middle St towards it, this structure has a sloppy patchwork of a dozen different colors on it... I am hoping there's still a bit of painting to be done because it looks like they finished that side of it with remnants left over from the rest of it.
Clearly the courtyard finishing...
Did the Hyatt leave room for a sidewalk on Fore St? Every time I walk past it I am wondering how that is going to work. Is the street parking that's across from it now going to be removed, or is the sidewalk going to be two feet wide?
It's really sad to see somebody wanting to invest big time into this depressed area and getting nothing but grief. I just can't understand how people think that midtown is somehow going to be worse for the neighborhood than the garbage that is there now. The positive economic ripple effects of...
