Portland International Jetport | PWM

Did anyone go to the Committee Meeting yesterday? Wondering how the parking expansion discussion went

It was approved by the committee and is on its way back to the City Council despite 3 public comments against the expansion.
The points against consisted of “expand metro” “expand bike-ability” “increase the price to park to disincentivize people to drive” and “the expansion is too close to a frog pond 250 feet away- this project cannot happen”…
Mr. Bradbury did a textbook job of addressing all of these “concerns” in a professional and informational manner. The committee was all on board and appreciated the 1.5 million added to the plan for planning of the garage.
Not sure when the city council will meet on this but if anyone is aware of this date and time, I’ll be there.

Sorry if this has been asked a bunch, but are there plans for PWM to fly anywhere in Canada (YUL or YQB)?? I know the new customs area was / is u/c??

There are not any flights to Canada on the horizon. Portland has had some service in the past to Toronto and Halifax on small aircraft but the flights did not work out due to various reasons. The FIS facility design plans are completed but construction is still a few years away from becoming a reality unless some additional funding becomes available.

Starlink had issues from the beginning, all flights to Halifax and Yarmouth used the FBO at Northeast Air, which was a problem for people who wanted to connect to other airlines. If it was over at the main terminal, then it might have worked. Plus flying over the Atlantic in a twin prop is not my cup of tea.
Air Georgian came in under a big route expansion that included BTV and other airports that Air Canada did not serve. They flew the 1900 turbo prop which no one wanted to fly on, TD Bank used that route often. Air G went into bankruptcy thus all flights to YYZ were eliminated. Until Trump is out of office, don't expect any Air Canada expansion into Maine and the Summer visits from Cananda start coming back. Canada also offers preclearance which you do not need a FIS station.

Was Air Georgian flying under the Air Canada banner? I remember them flying to Toronto.

Also, that got me to look at the list of preclearance airports and now my head is fantasizing an Emirates non-stop to and from Abu Dhabi! 😂

More record capacity incoming for the peak summer months.
Snipped this from Paul Bradbury’s presentation the other week with the sustainability/transportation committee.

Sounds like the admin office project is getting underway- bidding in the construction of the project was competitive which is great.
Updated visuals here of that shift of admin offices which will also shift the TSA offices to the old admin space, opening up a lot of room for new passenger amenities (concessions, restrooms, lounge).

Final snippet, some Jetport recognition- deservedly so. Now it’s time for the Jetport to be recognized by our state officials and federal programs due to all of their recent successes. Get the finding recognition they have earned.

Optimum Construction did an excellent job with the recent expansion and had a great working relationship with the jetport staff. It is interesting in how the enplanements in March more than double in June, July and August! (y)

Summary for those who can't see behind the paywall:

  • Portland International Jetport is overhauling its restaurant lineup for the first time in 14 years.
  • Starting this fall, North Carolina-based Tailwind Hospitality will replace four current venues with four new ones: local brands Luke's Lobster and Sisters Gourmet Deli, plus national chains Buffalo Wild Wings and Qdoba.
  • Starbucks is the only current tenant staying.
  • The full changeover takes 17 months and involves a $12 million investment.
  • Tailwind also plans a Maine craft beer pub next to Luke's and a "Portland Market" grab-and-go kiosk.
  • The contract runs 10 years.
  • The airport wanted a mix of local flavor and familiar national brands, and this lineup threads that needle.
  • Sisters Gourmet Deli (based in Bath, ME) gets full brand autonomy under their contract, while Luke's Lobster brings a well-known and growing Maine name to the concourse.

I wonder which Maine craft beer pub will be chosen? Shipyard Brew Pub will be missed by many and is as Portland based as you can get. Luke's Lobster is a great addition!

We finally get a Qdoba back and it's (presumably) going behind the security perimeter?????

So: assumptions and predictions...
  • Luke's goes where Linda Bean is now
  • That puts the new pub in the BK spot
  • The "Portland Market" kiosk is likely to be in the Great American Bagel spot (the most kiosk-like)
  • Shipyard becomes BWW and Qdoba goes into the Travel@Ease (that function taken over by the kiosk)
  • Or the Portland Market and Qdoba wind up the opposite of what I just said
Incidentally, per the Jetport website, all the long-term parking in the garage is currently full, and the remote Pink Lot is at 90%.

Your predictions are pretty accurate Mark. Here is the plan from Paul Bradbury who is always generous with his time and appreciates our interest in PWM: Luke's Lobster and the Brew Pub at Linda Beans, Qdoba in the Burger King space and Buffalo Wild Wings in the Shipyard space. Travel@Ease and the Downeast gift shop will remain in place until the "news & gift" RFP is issued at a later time.
