With the road conditions, utility poles, and backward parking layout, this looks like a scene from a third-world country.
Unfortunately, the poor infrastructure is all too common in America today.

Just curious what is meant by "backward parking layout," not sure I've heard that term before.
 
I suspect they mean cars parking in both directions on either side of the street. Guild Street is two ways, despite being quite narrow. Personally I like that way as its a natural traffic calming method of being forced to share the road.
 
I worked on this project when I was an intern at Davis Sq Architects (Formerly Mostue & Associates) while in school way back in 2006. That's how long this development has taken to be built.
