Took the opportunity to visit New Bedford for the first time using the new (and still-free) South Coast Rail! May 11, 2025. Some photos of old and new:

New hotel proposed just north of the Whales Tooth parking lot: https://www.southcoasttoday.com/sto...el-near-new-bedford-rail-station/83365523007/.

A new 140 room hotel in this location is great, and it's directly attributable to South Coast Rail. It's certainly an improvement over the tire recycling/trailer storage that's currently on the site. However, I hope that future "TOD" around the station can be a bit less... generic suburban looking? LaFrance has had success in the area (they developed the Fairfield Inn/Suites a bit further down the waterfront), but they lean right into the cookie cutter.
The New Bedford Light published a May 12th opinion piece on the proposed hotel and its uninspired design. Fair use quotes:

"Opinion: A new hotel, great! But, looking like this?
"A proposed hotel near the new train station should underscore New Bedford’s rich, architectural history – not look like a dull, neutral box.

"It’s exciting news that with rail service having returned, market projections for overnight visitors to New Bedford support investment in a new hotel. Terrific and thank you, South Coast Rail!

"Close to downtown, this could translate into more people on New Bedford’s streets exploring, shopping, and dining. And, some more full-time jobs, that’s even better for our local economy. Excellent!

"But must it look like every other cheap highway hotel?..."

I'm glad someone took the time to say it. And I'm pleasantly surprised by the comments in agreement. I hope the city pushes for something a little more interesting. There's a huge effort in the hospitality industry to give their brands a bit more personality. There's no reason this location can't be at least a little more interesting with a handful of unique features that reflect and take advantage of the location (rooftop bar being a great suggestion).

-This is the type of quality building that we should be building. Something that looks like what a building in downtown new bedford should look like. Plus it has ground floor retail. Building stuff like this is like raid spray for nimbys, there is no argument to be made against something like this. It makes the neighborhood a better place by being there.

Ribbon Cutting Celebrated for One Custom House Square

“Yesterday, MHIC celebrated the unveiling of downtown New Bedford’s newest development: 45 rental homes in a mixed-income community, located at One Custom House Square……”

City of New Bedford Seeks Public Input on Draft Design for New Skate Park Under Interstate 195

“For years, a popular skate park existed beneath Interstate 195 in New Bedford, built and maintained by local skateboarders. The state later closed the park.

The City of New Bedford has since worked with the state to develop a new skate park on the same site. To ensure the final design meets the needs of the community, Mayor Jon Mitchell is inviting public input on the draft sketch.

Residents, skateboarders, and interested parties can submit thoughts, ideas, and opinions by contacting the City of New Bedford Planning Department at 508-979-1488 or by emailing Jennifer.Carloni@newbedford-ma.gov

“New Bedford, MA Nearly 100 guests, including mayor Jon Mitchell and other city and state officials celebrated the official ribbon-cutting and opening of Flats At 8th, a new five-story 52-unit restricted-income apartment and mixed-use building in downtown. The new building, which also includes commercial space, was developed by Alinea Capital Partners, LLC, L. Duane Jackson, managing member, and designed by DHK Architects, Inc.

“The solution for the high cost of housing is to help increase the supply of housing, and that’s what this project does,” mayor Mitchell said. “I applaud Duane Jackson for his determination in seeing the project through, and for the work of his team, D.F. Pray, and many others for building a new landmark in our downtown.”

The fully leased residential floors include 12 one-bedroom apartments, 36 two-bedroom apartments and four three-bedroom apartments. In addition, the first floor includes a large community room with an outdoor deck, approximately 4,000 s/f of commercial space available to be leased, and 19 garage spaces. The building is walking distance from New Bedford City Hall, the courthouse and public library, as well as restaurants and stores…..”
