The New Bedford Light published a May 12th opinion piece on the proposed hotel and its uninspired design. Fair use quotes:New hotel proposed just north of the Whales Tooth parking lot: https://www.southcoasttoday.com/sto...el-near-new-bedford-rail-station/83365523007/.
A new 140 room hotel in this location is great, and it's directly attributable to South Coast Rail. It's certainly an improvement over the tire recycling/trailer storage that's currently on the site. However, I hope that future "TOD" around the station can be a bit less... generic suburban looking? LaFrance has had success in the area (they developed the Fairfield Inn/Suites a bit further down the waterfront), but they lean right into the cookie cutter.
I'm glad someone took the time to say it. And I'm pleasantly surprised by the comments in agreement. I hope the city pushes for something a little more interesting. There's a huge effort in the hospitality industry to give their brands a bit more personality. There's no reason this location can't be at least a little more interesting with a handful of unique features that reflect and take advantage of the location (rooftop bar being a great suggestion). The New Bedford Light published a May 12th opinion piece on the proposed hotel and its uninspired design. "Opinion: A new hotel, great! But, looking like this?
"A proposed hotel near the new train station should underscore New Bedford’s rich, architectural history – not look like a dull, neutral box.
"It’s exciting news that with rail service having returned, market projections for overnight visitors to New Bedford support investment in a new hotel. Terrific and thank you, South Coast Rail!
"Close to downtown, this could translate into more people on New Bedford’s streets exploring, shopping, and dining. And, some more full-time jobs, that’s even better for our local economy. Excellent!
"But must it look like every other cheap highway hotel?..."
