Yes, of course the Globe is in the business of generating clicks and thus needs to be dramatic and sensational in its own Globe sort of way, but in this case I don't think "civic embarrassment" is hyperventilating. After I read the piece I refreshed my memory of baseline conditions via a Google Maps tour... quite bad, if not downright appalling.

Oddly, the piece does not mention what I've always assumed has been the top conundrum permanently inhibiting a "total solution" here: the insane meandering of the Boston/Brookline boundary through the heart of the mess.
It seems to me, if all parties involved want real progress here, that some sort of special master should be appointed to "fix" the boundary such that it permanently goes away as a hindrance to planning what needs to be done... or do others think that would be an expensive and ultimately wasteful sideshow?
