    MBTA Construction Projects

Re: T construction news A few weeks ago I called Capitol Bikeshare since they had a web page on ADA and said to call. I called and left a message for a person responsible for more difficult questions saying I wanted to visit DC and use the system. Never got a call back. With all the lawyers...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

I have some free-market suggestions to help the MBTA: 1. Congestion hour pricing - Raise fares during congested times, lower in off hours. This reduces high capital and more workers costs of peak service delivery. Fewer buses adding to traffic congestion is an added bonus. Riders are encouraged...

Re: T construction news So, how does HubWay get away with not being ADA compliant? I have a kneecap that dislocates every time a bike crank reaches the top, and pops back in place by the time the crank gets to the bottom. However, I have a license to ride a motorcycle and can also ride a...

Instead of a van to shuttle bicycles back for people to ride, the simple, direct solution is to load people into vans and just shuttle them.

That's good. I hope they do some planning, though sharing that with member communities, and them with us would be good. The FHA doc is interesting. They got the financials from various systems, but didn't share details. Just that system price averaged $4,200-$5,400 per bike and operating cost...

So, what I'm hearing is "No, HubWay is not sustainable."

Of course not. Bixi got the cash for the stations and bikes, so failing just costs Alta some jobs and tourists don't get to ride anymore. Still, numbers would be good to see to figure out if expansion is warranted.

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

Back to the topic of this thread, various interests seem to be warming up for the new season of Funding the T. Lately some have been calling for putting more T costs on motorists and Mass Residents outside the metro area who purportedly still bask in the glow of Boston and Cambridge...

Any data yet on whether HubWay is financially sustainable? Its an important question, much like we would ask for Medicare or Social Security.

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos Consolidating stops is an area where free market forces can be used instead of politics and socialism. The assessment fees made to each community should be based on services provided, including train/bus stops times trips/week. Thus, communities would...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos I ran across the changes for fare evasion. From Sen. Will Brownsberger's web site, included with MBTA / RTA funding taken from vehicle inspection fees: "The legislation also increases fare evasion penalties to $75 for the first offense, $200 for the...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos The proof can be found in projects scheduled for funding by the Boston MPO in the TIP listings. The next half mile of Commonwealth Ave headed outbound is on the list. It seems now that "other funding" of $4M is added to taxpayer's $12M. This is new. BU...

Behind the scenes at Mass DOT

Untaxed benefits like parking and healthcare were both the norm for decades. Co-pay for both are now more common. Arlington has parking minimums, no overnight parking, and almost no metered parking. Only Arlington center has municipal, metered parking lots. Curb parking in other commercial...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos That's nice. What then if I just throw the notices in the trash? If I try to re-enter Germany, what happens? Do they catch me at the border and deny entry until I pay?

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos It doesn't matter how much the fines are, there are no penalties for not paying them if one doesn't have a Mass driver's license. The lack of consequences is much like traffic violations on bicycle, or getting caught with a joint. There won't be any...

    Biking in Boston

I wish it were my idea. I heard it was being done some places. It has its problems too - seasonal work putting in and taking out racks (same with HubWay) and having space to store them. The slight benefit of a curb extension is having pedestrians a little more visible to drivers and a clearer...

    Biking in Boston

There is an on-road bike rack I like - ones that are used INSTEAD of curb extensions to block car parking near an intersection, as long as minimal additional space is taken. Curb extensions cost thousands of dollars, yet show no reduction in accidents. They are hard to plow snow around, so bike...

Actually, destroying wetlands is no challenge for Cambridge. The $4M Obama stimulus project that creates one job named the Greenway Path Restoration Project was able to take out lots of trees and vegetation, and let people disturb the habitat of may animals because back in the 1930s Alewife...

Behind the scenes at Mass DOT

Parking structures don't drive families out of cities, the high cost of city housing, lack of back yards, perceived higher crime, and need to transport kids all around all do. Its simply faster and easier to take kids from school to piano lessons, and then to karate in a SUV in the burbs than on...
