    Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

    I'm kind of astonished that these new maps don't have a sticker over the GLX stations that says "Opening May 2022" or some such. That's kind of egregious even by T standards.

    They will loop through a busway next to the north/west headhouse of the new station, off North First St.

    Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

    The extensions were in the design to provide for a connection to the maintenance facility back when it was unclear where it was going to be. They were kept in the design as a result of advocacy from (I think) the Sierra Club and others in order to preserve them for a future light rail Urban Ring...

    I thought the intent was that the TPSSes were going to be integrated into whatever TOD goes in on those sites.

    It'll connect to the School St bridge. There's a gap in the concrete parapet for that purpose.

    Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

    There's some systems in European city centers where the electrification goes through the running rails, and it's segmented so that the tracks are only live when there's a train on them. Of course, it vastly complicates the track and signaling design and you definitely can't have CWR.

    Assembly Sq <-> Casino Footbridge

    In terms of staging, first thing is going to be to move the CR tracks to the east/south side of the corridor and eliminate the long freight leads, replacing them with a switch directly off the mainline. That will at minimum require single-tracking the Newburyport/Rockport line for a while. Then...

    Assembly Sq <-> Casino Footbridge

    Sheesh, who pissed in y'all's Wheaties this morning? (Or yesterday morning, looks like.) I'm not convinced that the proposed alignment blocks a LRT Urban Ring bridge. This line would have to come through Sullivan where the new storage tracks are, just west of the Orange Line, and then come up...

    Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

    I'm quite confident that that wasn't ever in the plan. The reason the station is so far offset from the bridge is so there's room for the tracks to diverge around the center platform after passing under the bridge. Otherwise they'd have had to rebuild the bridge, and it was already rebuilt like...

    I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

    I used to work near the Broadway crossing, and originally they'd just crawl across at 10 mph, doing the long-long-short-long whistle. Very frequently you'd see cars run the crossing right in front of the engine (once saw one promptly get busted by a cop waiting at the light at the other side)...

    Anyone know what that cinder block structure is that they're building next to the elevator at Ball Square?

    Transit history/trivia quiz

    4. Canobie Lake Park, built by the Massachusetts Street Railway Company in 1902. The loop where the steam train used to turn around, before they shortened it to expand the water park, was the original turnaround loop for the trolley line.

    I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

    F-Line has claimed that you can convert it to light rail even without NSRL once there's a full commuter rail maintenance facility on the south side (which I vaguely recall is under way), the greatly reduced number of transfers can then be done via Ayer. Certainly once NSRL is done and the system...

    Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

    I wonder if the School St and Medford St bridges will have "2021" at the extended end of the guardrails, so they'll have two different years on them. (I've always liked how bridges in MA have the year engraved like that.)

    Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

    It surprises me how narrow the entrance to Ball Sq from the bridge is; the gap between the bollards looks barely one wheelchair wide. And is it just me, or does the bridge at Magoun Sq look like a gangplank to a floating dock?

    Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

    There's a number of mountain railways in Europe that have racks for the steep parts and conventional adhesion for the rest. 30 km/h is pretty darned slow, however. Given the need to redesign and replace every locomotive, EMU etc. that uses the NSRL (and they would almost certainly have to be...

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

    That's a rendering, obviously, and it's a London Tube train, a system with even tighter physical constraints than the Central Subway. Note the doors that wrap into the roof so you can get in the thing without banging your head.

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

    Since the Type 10s will theoretically be a more or less off-the-shelf model and not a custom job, hopefully we'll get something prettier. Though all I care about is that it's less hideous than the Type 7s.

    What I'm wondering is when they're going to take down the old, faded Ball Square Animal Hospital sign.
