One Post Office Square Makeover and Expansion | Financial District

This is where the parking garage goes, so that would explain the heavier steel structure you see. From datadyne007's post a few pages back

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I can confirm the entrance to the parking garage from the highway as I used to use it all the time picking people up from the bus terminal. If I remember correctly it was free if you were there under 15 min. Even if you were there longer it was worth a few bucks to avoid the craziness of...

    UMass Amherst Developments

I was there at the same time, although I may have done a couple extra years. I try to visit a few times a year because there's no place like the pioneer valley. Just for the hell of it....

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

No this is all for the bus terminal expansion. We won't see tower steel go up for quite some time. The footprint of the new tower sits within the concourse area, but won't interfere with the actual head house building. You can see the outline of the tower below.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Agreed, I was being a little conservative for my estimates. I think this proves the point that most of the work will be able to be handled by the two crawler cranes until the tower pops up above the head house.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Nice pic! Not a crane expert by any means but it looks to be this configuration per the Leibherr technical data sheet (I'm not sure which model crane it actually is but this looks to be close enough). In this configuration the crane would have a maximum reach of 104m or ~341'. Guesstimating...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

That's at least a 300 ton crane, if not 400 ton. I'd call that a real crane. From the same logistics/schedule video that you referenced, it looks like the plan for the bus terminal is to have a second crawler crane set up on the east side of the tracks. For the tower portion, I wouldn't be...

If you're talking about this pic from Beeline, that's a cutting wheel similar to this.

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

Good news. Massachusetts lawmakers pass bill that takes steps to change state seal and motto, following decades of protests from indigenous activists I would love to see this go out as a design competition. The more submissions the better.

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

Yea this doesn't make any sense to me. All they had to do was flare the sides out ever so slightly towards the back of the power car and it would have been nicely streamlined.

    COVID-19 in Boston

I'd argue that this isn't exactly true. It may seem this way because all we can see on a day to day basis and most of what we talk about here are new tower projects, but there are many more renovation projects going on that you would/will never know about. I would tend to agree that...

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

I like what Ed Mitchel is trying to do with the homogeneous color palette across all states, but I'm not crazy about the blue that he uses and I don't think that the proposed Mass flag is really seem representative enough of the state. I came across this site that has I think most of the...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Speaking as an NYC commuter, all I've wanted is to have an equivalent of the Charlie Card. The ease of pulling my whole wallet out and tapping it was perfect.

    NYC Architecture and Development

I was very glad to see this news as well. I'm sure there will be a new design, and who knows how much for the 4 diamonds tower will remain, but thank god that stack of boxes is not going to become reality.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I think everyone (including myself) vastly underestimated the foundation work required for the tower. I guessed it would be using the existing but with heavy modifications. Looking at the video it looks like it's going to be almost completely new foundations, and foundation work is not quick...

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

I happened upon a neat old video of the New Haven railroad from 1942 that I thought you all might enjoy, with highlights of both the passenger & freight operations. It starts off in Boston and there are some shots of South Station, Back Bay Station, and New Haven Union Station.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

It's almost certain that there is going to be some level of foundation work before this thing goes vertical. I think it is unlikely that the foundations that were installed however many decades ago are perfectly ready for the current scheme. In fact this report from MIT in 2003 seems to indicate...
