The Art of Boston's Modern Architecture

I've always had a thing for the Fiduciary Trust Building in the Financial District, it's like a giant black gemstone. There must be other buildings out there like it, but I've never seen one. Walking next to it and looking up at its underside is quite a feeling! As well as 99 High Street...

    Downtown Crossing/Financial District | Discussion

My only beef with some of the flags in DTX is that once they succumb to the elements, become faded, torn, frayed, etc., the retailer the flag belongs to will rarely replace it with a new one, and it ends up looking pretty trashy. Other than that, I'm in agreement with you on this.

The Art of Boston's Modern Architecture

I had to google a couple of them - Carpenter Center and Hurley Building. I see both of them on a pretty regular basis, but I don't know them by name very well. Also, it's good to see photos of the buildings side-by-side before voting, rather than judging by memory. If not for that, I would...

Silver Line - Phase III / BRT in Boston

Re: Silver Line Phase III I do like that urban claustrophobic feel sometimes, and when I think back on how Causeway street used to be - there was something to it that was pretty cool. Before I went to Chicago, part of me would have liked to have that elevated Green Line back. But the...

Silver Line - Phase III / BRT in Boston

Re: Silver Line Phase III The last thing I'd want in Boston is another El. I visited Chicago about a year ago for the first time, and I found it to be a claustrophobic and depressing experience walking under the El in the loop. It reminded me of life in Boston before the Big Dig, and made me...

    In defense of Boston

I've heard a lot of complaints about the crown over the years, but I like how funky it is. And the building is terrific, though taller would have been better here.

Re: New Tower(s) Planned For Prudential Center ^Thanks - I appreciate the explanation! That makes a lot more sense, it always looked to me as if that statue should have a lot more room to soar.

Question about the fate of the Littlest Bar

I just called 45 Province, and the rep said that it will be "some sort of bar" that will work in conjuction with a restaurant within the complex. She had no further details.

Re: New Tower(s) Planned For Prudential Center Yes, IMO not a good relationship, but a chortle-inducing one. He wants to get out of that plaza, and so doesn't everyone else!

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I walked through the above photos yesterday - very beautiful and stunning on a sunny day compared to about 3 months ago. Nice job, Mass. Horticultural Society.

Re: New Tower(s) Planned For Prudential Center I hope that wherever he ends up, it's more contextually appropriate than the previous location - it always looked to me as if he were inexplicably just floating there, or trying to glide up and over the Hynes. A beautiful statue, but it needs to...

Mandarin Oriental | 776 Boylston St | Back Bay

Re: Mandarin Oriental I walked into the Mandarin the other day, got a quick view of the interior and was disappointed. The restaurant and bar look nice enough, but I was hoping for a more high-ceilinged and spacious lobby. It was too constricting and tunnel-y. I didn't see the...

East Boston: Pedestrian bridge and hotel

Yeah, that all makes sense. I figured that Boston was either totally enthralled with tunnels at the time, or it was a safety issue - thanks for clearing it up, and I can now put my dream to rest... I wasn't at all involved in community meetings, though I kept up with what was going on (and...

East Boston: Pedestrian bridge and hotel

After living in East Boston for three years (just recently moved to Central Square, Cambridge), it struck me that the neighborhood, and all of the Boston area, could be well served by a foot/bicycle bridge spanning the harbor from, say, Long Wharf to the development adjacent to Piers Park. This...

    Boston in the Seventies

It doesn't help any that most all of the retail places there close at around 6 or 7. The area has definitely improved much over the years (I remember ca. 1990 that I'd walk those streets with much caution), but its identity is still largely daytime oriented (towards tourists and the Financial...

    Boston in the Seventies

I'd put Central Square firmly in the "good grit" category. Somehow, over the years it's managed to more or less hold on to its character. I was just thinking recently on my walk home how the pounding of the drums in the Dance Complex is such a welcoming neighborhood rhythm. Beautiful...

    Boston in the Seventies

East Boston is another example of "good grit". There's an amazing mix of ethnicities and economic classes over there across the harbor.
