New-build classical architecture (evoking old styles)

Was walking around the Brookland neighborhood of DC and came upon new construction at Catholic University of America. As far as the trend on campuses these days to evoke collegiate gothic style, this is a good effort:

Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

No -- it is not an example. Those places have undergone major reconstruction. So, its not apples to apples. You are right about the Hojo (which is or was hardly the Sheraton) -- it'll be demolished eventually. Still, you haven't made a point. My understanding was that the City was very...

Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

Those BU “hotels” you mention were acquired 4 decades ago. Not relevant to this discussion and as you’re aware, both recently underwent extensive renovations to bring them up to standards for current uses at BU — at the expense of the University.

Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

Boston is notoriously low vacancy. Perhaps the motivation is that since this is an older Sheraton, they no longer represent the brand and require significant upgrades that are cost prohibitive. The place is seriously dated.

74M (EDGE Assembly Sq.) | 74 Middlesex Ave | Somerville

Does Somerville have a height limit? It's starting to take on a New Rochelle vibe in Union and Assembly Row.

Midtown Hotel Redevelopment | 220 Huntington Avenue | Back Bay

Well, not all mixed-use implies restaurants, liquor, etc.

CSC doesn't allow bars / alcohol but would allow for hundreds of college students? That seems paradoxical.

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

What is the purpose of the canopy structure? It doesn’t seem to provide protection from the elements given that the T head houses exit outside of the covered area.

Midtown Hotel Redevelopment | 220 Huntington Avenue | Back Bay

Let’s hope that is not the case. This is a prime location for a true mixed-use development contributing to the city’s tax base.

Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

A lot of those European plazas are also successful because they are at the confluence of the respective city's social, cultural, and civic activities. I would liken Downtown Crossing to this. Copley "Square" on the other hand, is by nature a destination and deserves a heightened level of...

Skylines and Developments of the US/World

I currently reside in DC and visit Baltimore regularly. I must say that I’m impressed with Harbor Point and the environs. In same aspects it reminds me of the Seaport and in others surpasses it from an urban perspective (likely because it isn’t cut off from the rest of the harbor and inner city...

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

The issue is not the design of the slide rather the angle of the descent. That is the design failure here. Raise it up a foot or 2 and this would not have been an issue.

Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

Also, the plaza fronting Trinity Church has been swapped with the grass fronting Dartmouth which I think is a great move. Grass fronting the church allows for passive use while a plaza at Dartmouth and an eventual extension to BPL is a much more natural use of the entire space. The raised...

Except for the part that it isn’t exactly the same.

Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

In fairness, Copley Square has been looking a bit worn for at least a decade. They may not be fundamentally changing the purpose of the square, as they shouldn’t, but it’s a welcome refresh that should make it more functional and modernized in the process.

Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

Are there really any American examples? Closest I can think of are Jackson Square in New Orleans and Santa Fe Plaza (both still not entirely car-free).

    This building seriously deserves better.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

I’ve hesitated posting this but will anyway. I find the “wheelchair accessibility” architecture a bit inappropriate where an easier design for those in wheelchairs could have been incorporated, for instance, one of the two staircases that bookend it could have been a accessible incline. Also...
