    Paying for Naming the T

I wouldn't consider renaming Kenmore to "Kenmore - Fenway Park" to be a corporate sponsorship since the ballpark is a physical landmark for the city. In that same vein, MGH doesn't pay any money for Charles/MGH station naming.

    Paying for Naming the T

Three million euros for a three-year agreement that rebrands not only Sol but all of Line 2 sounds suspiciously cheap, so I wonder if it really is more about revenue or politics. Assuming that Metro de Madrid would pay for all of the rebranding expenses, the amount of money spent on...

    Paying for Naming the T

I can understand corporate takeovers of stations for extended periods of time, but to refer to a station like "Red Sox Kenmore" or "Celtics North Station" would be atrocious. Just look at Vodafone Sol in Madrid. It's fine when we're just talking about slapping up a logo on station signage...

Loads are only half of the equation, though. A quick look at Copa's one-way BOS-PTY fares in January shows them ranging around $450-900+. Considering we have domestic routes that are longer than BOS-PTY (e.g. BOS-West Coast) and have one-way fares much less than that, my guess is they're doing...

Isn't the most logical detour 93S -> exit 24 -> Greenway to Congress St -> Service Road -> South Boston Bypass -> 90E? I suppose you could be looking at an oversaturated Greenway and local South Boston streets... but still. The rest of those are just ouch.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Re: Green Line to Medford to start in 2011 There may be more signs which make the boarding process appear more uniform in Spanish Solution stations, but from my experience there is no actual restriction from passengers using the island platform versus the side one to exit or enter the train...

    B Line Improvements

Yay! Aside from the insanely useless nature of half the stops located along their campus, this is all the more reason to shutter half of them. D is probably your best bet given it sees more capacity than the B or C. I was in a similar situation before I moved to Rozzie (lived 7 mins from B...

It's a route with fares that aren't much different from SFO and MIA while those routes are 30-60% longer. I'm not sure how SFO and MIA compare, but you'd have to see a local market many times the size of BOS-BRU to make up for the increased distance/flying time and decreased aircraft...

Madrid is a great location for USA-Africa and Iberia does have a somewhat decent network, but I suppose it goes without saying that it pales in comparison to what Air France-KLM offers from Paris and Amsterdam or even what British Airways offers from London. No, I suppose the average summer...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

The more I see future maps it just makes me realize how desperately we need to move away from colors and migrate towards numbers as route designators. The Green Line is already a confusing mess to visitors (and residents who don't use it regularly, for that matter) so I can't imagine what...

Completely agreed. With the transatlantic joint venture agreement between AA-BA-IB, BOS-MAD makes the most sense on AA's 757s. Likewise, I could see BOS-FCO moving to a seasonal DL 757 service as part of the DL-AF-KL-AZ joint venture. The problem with BOS-Southern Europe is that it tends to...

Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

Alitalia has severe systemic issues with its route network, labor relations and expenses, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were forced to chop BOS. They wouldn't be doing so for lack of a BOS-Italy market, though, but rather their own incompetency. If Italy weren't such a large...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

^ I'm not sure I see the connection? At any rate, expanding any combination of Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton for likely less than a quarter of that $77 billion boondoggle makes so much more sense.

This has nothing to do with Emirates launching BOS-DXB, though. Or Oakley's comment about Qatar being beaten to the punch in Boston by Emirates and Turkish. Based on the timing I'd say Oakley is 100 percent spot on: Qatar chose two destinations that Emirates is likely to add in the near future...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos ^ Blue may not be at capacity, but the segment which would be most positively impacted by the Red-Blue connector - Government Center-Park Street on the Green Line - is easily the most congested in the whole network.

    County Re-alignment

It's certainly some compelling foreshadowing. I'm sure we'd see the crack smoking crew come out in full force to support such a candidate in an amalgamated Boston. ;)

    County Re-alignment

Exactly. Think about it this way: the area inside/around Route 128 is roughly 275 square miles and includes a population of at least two million. There are no less than thirty distinct municipalities in that area. Just think of the amount of duplicated efforts multiplied across all of those...

    County Re-alignment

It would have to be sold on a platform of regional growth and efficiencies. In a phrase: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The region can't be at its best when every town is spending a whole lot of time, energy and money by duplicating the exact same efforts as every other small...

    County Re-alignment

Yeah, I'm also not sure what a county realignment would accomplish? Unless we're talking about wholesale city-county government consolidations? Now Boston annexing all of the cities within/around 128... that would be a game changer. Give the former cities something like the status municipal...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

If there's really no way to bore tunnels for a Mass Ave subway and the only options are to build an elevated structure or not build anything, don't you think the majority of people would say to go with the elevated?
