I agree, but I must admit I didn't think it would present such a wide facade across the Charles. Good that it will have the proportional height.

Kendall Common ( née Volpe Redevelopment) | Kendall Sq | Cambridge

It's a monolith...great for monuments, bad for buildings that humans are forced to look at.

Marketplace Center | Quincy Market | Downtown

There's something terribly off-kilter about the whole thing as proposed. It's imbalanced and lacking a sense of "place" as Robert Stern might say. The new section's materials, colors are off-putting...too much black steel and blank-staring glass. It looks as if they said: "Let's put 7...

View Boston (Observatory) | Prudential Tower | Back Bay

But can you recall New England Merchants National Bank, National Bank of Boston, State Street Bank and Trust, Provident Institution for Savings...once I start thinking about them they roll off my brain!

State Street HQ | One Congress | Bulfinch Crossing | West End

Not so much a theme but the result of a huge earthquake. Imitation appears to be operating though.

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

As with everything else, I've learned to withhold judgment until something has been completed and lived with for a while. My biggest concern is always future maintenance. This is not Post Office Sq where big corporate $$$ supports it. Hopefully there will still be plenty of hardscape for...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I saw the vine problem from day 1. I don't know why someone just doesn't fill in the voids above with opposing slats of metal or wood...just to give some shade. It will never be as effective as the Post Office Square treatment, but at least it won't look unfinished.

7INK (née Ollie) | 217 Albany St | South End

You're are correct, Sir! I can't believe this is called "habitation". I suppose the residents are supposed to spend time in multi-use common spaces. One problem: 45% of the population is primarily introvert and find common spaces anathema. Back to the cell, I guess.

Canopy by Hilton (née Haymarket Hotel) | Blackstone St | Parcel 9 | Greenway

I think the brick façades are particularly successful wherever the sun hits them and creates some interesting shadow lines, esp. around the windows. That said, the end wall best defines the building and its relationship with the hotel next door as does the long angled façade. The black areas...

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

I can't believe someone finally stated what you did! I've been quietly arguing the same matter for years, but somehow the skyline view of Boston, which I also like, dominates in any discussion. And now that that distant view is increasingly a seen as a jumble of boxes of very different colors...

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

You make a good point. Aside from political favors, etc., when the Moakley was imagined and built, the entire glassed canopy area inside, overlooking the harbor and skyline was supposed to be accessible to all people, whether or not they had business in the court house. I believe there was to...

    50 Liberty @ Fan Pier | 50 Liberty Drive | Seaport

It's the yellow background for signage. I've seen that background only for pawn shops, gun shops, strip joints, tire/brake repair, and any other kind of shop in a down-scale neighborhood looking for attention, along with chain link fencing.

Amazon Office Tower I | 111 Harbor Way (Seaport Square Parcel L4) | Seaport

Due to the design, it appears that if they opened up the gaps to accommodate the trunks, there would be literally a hole around the trunk and a tripping hazard for pedestrians. It appears the whole thing is constructed like the floor of a house, with rafters and open spaces. That would...

Hmmm...any plans for that parking lot on Merrimac St, ripe for development? While on the edge of the Bulfinch Triangle, why not a nice medium tower there?

Somerville High School Renovation & Expansion | 81 Highland Ave | Somerville

All it would take is one illness and one lawsuit from an installer of the turf or from someone who later walked or played on it. Class action suit anyone? I'm from Woburn, where such remediation came too late for the dozens who got sick and died from toxic chemicals in the soil and wells.

    The New Retail Thread

The problem for me is the "empty warehouse looking for a permanent purpose" esthetic that plagues nearly every food court I've ever visited, except the former one at the Pru. The need for the excessive noise vibe, for the feeling of the space's immanent vacancy, and for industrial lighting does...
