General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Something worth noting: one month ago on 3/28, the slow zones on the MBTA hit an all time high of 28% of rapid transit track. As of today, 5% of that has been eliminated for 23% of track under slow zones. It'll be interesting to see with the huge increase in work this month (especially on the...

Bulfinch Crossing | Congress Street Garage | West End

I‘m guessing the lack of demo recently is because they need to close the Haymarket tunnels to finish the remaining portion and the last thing the T wants to do is shut down any part of the orange line anytime soon, so it’s probably in limbo for the moment - just speculation though.

A friend said they saw an old orange line train pass through Jackson Square this morning- doors didn’t open and the lights were off. Maybe testing for return to service for better frequencies soon?

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Great news for the orange line- only slow zone left is a small recently-added one northbound from North Station to Community College that hopefully will resolve soon. The Red Line on the other hand… oof

Mission Hill Infill and Small Developments

Quick tour of some new construction: Didn‘t realize until looking it up that these two on Terrace St are meant to affordable artist’s condos- pretty cool. No idea if they’re open yet though This one also on Terrace is luxury condos- 2 bed 2 bath on sale for almost a million dollars. Also has...

Looks like as of today Wellington->Sullivan slow zone has been lifted: Glad to finally see movement on the southbound side of things.

It’s also worth noting that northbound travel times along the entire line are finally back down to their pre-shutdown numbers: Southbound not at all:

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Found something! According to this, you have to sign up for MassDOT email updates to get the update sheets, don’t know why they don’t post it somewhere. Maybe this person will tweet them out every day though.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Is there a list somewhere of all the projects/ locations that are included as a part of the Orange line shutdown? Everything I can find on the T’s website seems pretty vague as opposed to something like the Green Line branch closure pages, which have maps with all the work areas and activities...

    Biking in Boston

I wonder if this is to finally fix the speed restriction over the Lechmere viaduct? Can’t imagine what else it would be for on a brand new line (unless it’s to do some last-minute tie-in work for the Medford Branch).

New Red and Orange Line Cars

That‘s the main reason I’m fine with them pulling trains now, while they still can without major disruptions, though I didn’t realize we‘re almost at that point already with the Orange line. Ideally fixing all of this now means we don’t have a disaster like the 7000 cars being pulled in DC while...

I think things were even worse back then. It says 2 miles of Green Line is under speed restrictions, mostly in the Central Subway, my guess is before all the track work they’ve been doing on the surface branches that number would have been much higher although I don’t have data to back that up...

I‘m happy they’re mandating that Orange Line work at least. Doesn’t matter how new the train is, the 8 minutes it takes to go the two stops from Tufts to Mass Ave right now is painful. All the lack of training stuff is just embarrassing, hopefully a lot of changes come out of this.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

The Worcester third track project from I-95 to Framingham will include a decent amount of speed improvements, some sections designed for 90 mph- not sure if anything is planned for beyond Framingham though.

Mission Hill Infill and Small Developments

A fun context map from the PNF- Link This seems like near-perfect development to me - a lot of housing filling vacant space, it’ll likely be filled almost entirely with college students, justifying the low parking numbers and opening up more of the older housing on Mission Hill for families, and...
