Interesting comment from Reddit (so add plenty of salt) regarding the proposed MPBS site next to the Galt Block... https://www.reddit.com/r/portlandme/s/x7RqhrFJvo

    Portland Passenger Rail

As things stand, the Maine legislature has accepted the recommendation of the Rail Use Advisory Council to convert the Mountain Division to a trail ("until rail," tee hee), although they declined to fund any such work. So CSRR is kind of out in the cold on that one. And Amtrak is in the mix...

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

I have, we arrived on a cold damp night in April, and my son uses a wheelchair so we had to wait around FOREVER on the tarmac for him to be brought off the plane. I now know how wheelchair passengers are taken off planes without a jetway, but I will not say that knowledge was worth the effort it...

    Portland Passenger Rail

Unsurprising. Like MDOT says every time, I-95 is Service Level A at 70 MPH from the Kennebec River almost to Bangor (where it drops to a harrowing Service Level B), and then the Turnpike is Service Level A from the I-295 split through L/A to Portland. If the existing population had a greater...

I don't have the link copied, but in the packet from NNEPRA's April board meeting, we see that, both in March and April, the meetings ended with an executive session to discuss acquisition of real property. Hmmm ...

    Portland's Franklin Street redesign

I am glad that the survey was open-ended enough to allow me to express my contrarian views. Too often these surveys force you to do things like rank 7 items, but if you find 6 of them reprehensible that's a problem.

Portland Music Hall | Cumberland Avenue

I think the bad precedent was set when The Stadium wanted to become a Hooters and a whole segment of city cognoscenti went into a tizzy.

Infill and Small Developments | Portland

The Benkay building looks great! I remember when Auto Europe redid the Galt Block down the street, I thought they should do a similar dormer (the fifth floor in there is HUGE... it feels like a basketball court), but the company really didn't have a use for a boardroom-style meeting space. But...

Hey, don't sell Disgusta short... Their downtown isn't just a short street, it's a short, creepy street!

Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

How much presence does Key Bank even have in the complex these days, especially since they got rid of the lobby branch? (This also reminds me that the plaza has been the Maine HQ of Key Bank for decades longer than it was the Canal Bank home office.)

Given the judge's reasoning when he found against them, they had no other realistic choice. Thanks for relaying the news.

I don't think that Shipyard has been open in years. Personally, I thought of it as a place to wait for whomever you're picking up. Park in the garage, grab a beer, force your friend to watch you finish it when they want to get moving.

Given that Maine doesn't have billboards, I'm guessing that the Jetport is pulling in some sweet cash from Clearchannel for that space.

    Historic Portland Discussion

Tracing the Fore chiefly served to keep barhoppers such as myself from passing out on the grass c. 1:30 Am. I was done with those days by the time they installed it, though. @Portlander , that Tydol station... I'm going to mention that post in the Portland History Facebook group; they once...

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

I'm not involved with Landmarks, but I wonder how much of what you say here is them, and how much is the city Historic Preservation Committee, which very much seems to be the "there's a smidge too much blue in that paint to be authentic, and by the way you can't keep those awesome carved doors...

    Portland Passenger Rail

I think another thing that worked against the 295 route was that it would have instead blocked 3 of the 4 routes from the north into downtown Portland: Forest, Preble and Franklin, and right at the entrance to the city. As it stands, the CSX main might have many crossings, but they spread out...

    Portland Passenger Rail

One interesting point is that, although the SLR no longer needs the line (since there haven't been customers on it since B&M shut down and, before that, Hancock Lumber in Yarmouth stopped taking rail deliveries), a short section in East Deering is still in use by the marina, which apparently has...
