    Red Line Extension to Mattapan

While I do find the debate above to be thoughtful and interesting, I've got to say that we're looking for fairness in something that isn't meant to be fair. Milton's existence as a wealthy low-density suburb immediately adjacent to Boston is the result of weath inequality and unsustainable...

    Dorchester Infill and Small Developments

Zip is 02121, which straddles Roxbury and Dorchester. BPDA's own neighbhood map puts everything west of Blue Hills Ave (plus some stuff east of it) in Roxbury, including this development at 157 Humboldt. Curious how BDPA decided this was Dorchester. Also curious if the listed neighborhood has...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Haven't read the reports as closely as some of you folks, but I'll say that including Everett Sq is a no-brainer. Connecting people's houses to their jobs is just one of the functions of rapid transit, and it's one that is rivalled in convenience by car travel. Connecting people to walkable town...

Councilor Wu's Proposal To Abolish The BPDA (65-pp. report)

Fully agreed that approvals shouldn't be at the whim of an elected official. But couldn't this also be achieved if the city council codified a more liberal zoning policy such that the majority of projects were by-right instead of by-appeal?

How long have you lived here?

According to Jane Jacobs in the Death and Life of Great American Cities, most "experts" at the time also found the North End to be a terrible slum and wanted it to see the same fate. NIMBYs drive me crazy... but the absolute hubris and inhumanity of midcentury planners have given everyone a...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

Does anyone know if they are building with future OL conversion in mind? The Needham line by Millenium Park is fortunately grade separated, but unfortunately single-tracked. It'd be a shame if they build CR platforms that weren't also compatible with a double-tracked, third-rail-powered OLX.

Middlesex County Courthouse Redevelopment | 40 Thorndike St | East Cambridge

Architecture opinions are so funny. I found the old building oppressive and depressing. I think the new building is A-OK... while tall, its unremarkability lets it take a back seat to the beauty of East Cambridge's brick courthouses and old townhouses. That said, I think the brutalist concrete...

Yeah, it seems entirely pedantic 🙄

If we're extra unlucky, the asteroid crater will be redeveloped as single family housing.

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

You mean Orange -> Blue -> Shuttle? 🙂 The power of SL1 and the hypothetical SL0 is that they will bring you right to your terminal. Transfers are extra brutal when you're lugging around suitcases.

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

While we're extending SL1 to Back Bay, how about an SL0 that would start at North Station, follow T7's route to South Station, and continue with SL1 to the airport? That'd give northern CR riders a 2-seat ride to the airport, and also provide a one-leg "rapid transit" link between the two halves...

    Whats left to build on?

I am also upset about hear about places like Sligo in Davis Sq closing (although I'm not even sure that lab is still happening...?) but I disagree that it always goes this way. Lyndell's in Ball Sq is being rebuilt as a 5-over-1, and they plan to remain open during construction and eventually...

    Seaport Transportation

I had proposed something like that in the context of Green Line Reconfiguration, and @Riverside had some interestimg analysis of the impact of turning those roads into a transit-only corridor (assuming you mean that and not tunneling--tunneling under those roads has its own set of expensive...

    Addressing the nationwide housing crisis

Providence's housing situation affects Boston's. So does Portland's, Hartford's, and even Burlington VT's. That because there are plenty of people who live in/near Boston, struggling with housing prices, who would (and do) consider moving to those places because they are cities that don't...

    The New Retail Thread

I'd give Gov Center (4) a bit more credit, especially Union St and Faneuil, which as far as I can tell is bustling with both locals & tourists every Friday and Saturday night year-round. It seems like a lot of people go out to eat in the North End and then walk over to Gov Center for the...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

At risk of a tangent, I'm curious what makes you view Fairmount rather than NEC as the clear mainline for Franklin/Foxboro in a regional rail future. Transitmatters' Fairmount report frames it as an open question. They have a table of pros and cons, which focuses on Frankling Line impact oddly...

Why is the subway so jerky?

Definitely a fun watch, lots of cool info. There were a couple things that raised my eyebrows though, particularly the idea that Porter is as deep as it is because... they accidentally bored the tunnel deeper than they were supposed to?

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

What gets me, though, is that they don't declare a distinct higher service level for SL routes. It's still "Every 15 minutes or better", just like "T" bus routes. That's good bus service, but it's not rapid transit. The political part of it... yeah, I know. 🙃

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Following up on my semi-obvious question here, the new "T" prefix does indeed indicate high-frequency routes. Specifically, from this map: What was confusing me was that there are other corridors that are part of the new navy-blue-denoted "high frequency" network, but without the "T" prefix. I...

    Addressing the nationwide housing crisis

Without any data to back this up, I'd wager that Hartford, Worcester, Springfield, etc building up and becoming more vibrant would make them more attractive to young professionals and help relax the huge demand on Boston housing.
