    Why Portland?

I'll just keep trickling out my observations at they come. As far as coffee goes, so far I've been to Zarra's. It's a great place for people watching. Portland is very bikable. I know now to avoid the unpaved part of the trail between the sewage plant and Hannaford (and beyond?). And as...

    Why Portland?

I counted no fewer than four independent bookstores in downtown Portland today.

    Why Portland?

This is why. I'd become accustomed to the steady stream of evidence of Boston's neighborhoods declining in vibrancy, diversity of retail and nightlife and the invasion of chain stores and bank branches where weird and local places previously dominated. Don't get me wrong, Boston is...

    Thinking of moving to Portland

It wasn't one of those. It is off of Brighton Ave., close to the 7-11. Haven't been to the Great Lost Bear.

    Thinking of moving to Portland

I live in Portland now, in a single-family with a couple students and cats a few blocks from USM. Thank you all for your invaluable guidance, especially in steering me away from the crack zone.

    Providence developments

I make excuses to visit Providence now and then. The city seems very healthy when it comes not only to new development but also a number of major downtown renovation projects. Impressively, though, Providence would be a delightful city even without the new stuff.

UMass Boston Developments | Columbia Point | Dorchester

I'm impressed with important elements of this plan: Nearly total elimination of surface parking: The closure of the megastructure's garage has led to a proliferation of new surface parking wherever it fits, even on the tennis courts. Mixed-use dorms: I've always thought UMB's physical...

    Thinking of moving to Portland

One of them interests me and I'll take it if they'll have me. If not, the search goes on. And yeah, it is hard searching from out of state. I've never done anything like that before and it feels a little adventurous. Also, I've been living a 45 minute door-to-do commute from my school, so it...

I saw places on Devonshire and Dartmouth.

    Thinking of moving to Portland

I looked at a couple places in the USM area this weekend. The Downeaster offers a big student discount when you buy six tickets in advance. One-way fare comes out to $12.67 versus the full $23. I arrived at 1pm and left at 3pm. So I was on the train 5 hours for a 2 hour visit. But the train...

Photo of the Day, Boston Style - Part Deux

There are self-publishing options that are pretty reasonable for photobooks.

I'm going to look at a place Sunday.

    Thinking of moving to Portland

Thanks. I've had my eye on craigslist. This looks like one that I'll check out.

    Thinking of moving to Portland

It looks like I'll be answering some roommate wanted ads. The only studios I can afford are in and around the crack zone. Sure, I'll be passing through it to score some smack. But I don't want to live there. If any of you Portlanders know of someone seeking a roommate walking distance from...

    Thinking of moving to Portland

Besides being a little out of the way and surrounded by highway crap, what can you tell me about this area?

    USM Portland...

The student housing is a great idea except for the predicted rent. $750 per student in a 4 bedroom unit. http://www.ci.portland.me.us/planning/showart.asp?contentID=304
