MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

It's worth considering the broader scope of Amtrak service proposals receiving these grants, because that's not the only proposal/study: https://railroads.dot.gov/sites/fra.dot.gov/files/2023-12/FY22%20CID%20Project%20Summaries-Map-r1.pdf - Green Mountain Corridor - Another VT service -...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Versailles appears to have a population density of ~8,200/sqmi (and real-world numbers are probably more like ~16,000+/sqmi, since half the place is parkland from the famous palace, so the population is all concentrated in the other half). That may be the "suburbs" of Paris, but those are some...

Dean Rd is basically immediately adjacent to Beaconsfield (D), so that's probably an additional consideration. Also for users coming from the South, the ped tunnel at Clinton Path means Englewood Ave is even less of an additional walk to use instead than it looks at first glance, if you do want...

A few thoughts: - First, in neither case was the road "fixed". Repaired enough to mostly reopen with temporary measures while a long-term rebuilding happens for the actually permanent fix, yes. Both have had/will have many lane closures and other disruptions by the time they're truly fixed in...

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

Largely agreed with what you have to say here. As someone who's moved around a bit, including residing further north for a time in the past few years - It feels pretty dumb to drive right past MHT to go to BOS, but the service levels are so hollowed out for MHT at this point that even as...

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

On this same note, replacing the (6-8 lane) Moses Wheeler bridge next to it appears to have cost about $550m in 2023 dollars. I do struggle to understand why seemingly pretty close to identical projects in terms of scale and complexity cost 4 times as much for the rail version.

    Bowker Overpass replacement?

Don't think there's the land for it unless you claw back space from...somewhere? (Newbury? Ipswich? Both?). And/or cut travel lanes on the Pike. I'm also not sure how this overpass...works. Those are yellow lines overlaid on the existing layout without explaining the rest. How do vehicles get...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Alternatively......Speed + frequency. Doesn't matter how far you are geographically, what matters is how far you are in commuting time. This is of course, 10 years out of date but is a way to think about that: http://www.stonebrowndesign.com/uploads/9/7/6/9/9769402/mbta-rail-timescale.png It's...

In what way did it run faster in 2021? I've played around with TM's historical trip time data a bit and it looks like the Ashmont branch is running as fast as it did in 2021 for Northbound. Yesterday's (10/31/23) median time for Ashmont->JFK was 8min 23sec, the same date in 2021 was 8min 42sec...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Cameras on buses catch the people who are actually delaying the bus. While I agree that people using the lane illegally is a bad thing even if they're not in the way of a bus....being in the way of the bus certainly seems like the highest priority enforcement target.

Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

It's certainly not great but there is *a* connection or two you could reasonably expect to make, especially if you're a US citizen w/Global Entry or the like. Looks like DL currently has a 10:45 to Lisbon and a 10:15 to Dublin. And via Virgin there's a 10:15 to London.

    Bowker Overpass replacement?

There is currently a massive freeway plopped directly over the top of the Emerald Necklace in this area, in a way that makes basically 100% of the theoretical park land completely unappealing, broken up, and virtually never used by anyone in the few spots where it is even possible to access...

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

If it was actually built like that, it'd be about 1.25 miles via the shortest reasonable walking path to get to B Security. If there's some moving walkways or something in there that speed up that first half mile a bit, it might actually be a reasonably attractive option for a good chunk of the...

Utica Alt C scores well (and is a 2 stop extension as part of it), Alt B (a much larger extension) + SAS south to Houston don't seem to score badly, just not the top of the list. I'm not really seeing any other major subway projects that anyone seriously thought would score very well on this...

Yes, that's pretty much exactly how the concept of scheduling works. Shutting down the Braintree branch for a particular weekend wouldn't be a great plan if Quincy was holding some event that weekend with thousands of attendees, for example.

Because shutdowns are disruptive and affect everyone in the area impacted, both residents + businesses? Having discussions with them and trying to time them for the least problematic period for them is....how any responsible entity would (or should) act?

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I recognize this is potentially a very tall order given the current safety....challenges, but this primarily suggests to me that the MBTA needs to learn to perform trackwork (or at least most setup/breakdown) on one track without needing to shut down the full line. The time calculus of what's...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I have the vague impression that the MBTA's problems in the divisions needed to actually resolve these issues aren't a thing that can necessarily be rushed. If you've lost a lot of your institutional knowledge + experienced skilled workers, I don't know that there's some way to shortcut that...

I don't know what the "norm" is for rail procedures, but having sometimes listened to Air Traffic Control, I'm curious here. There the norm seems to be to require to require acknowledgement for most/safety-critical instructions and if the acknowledgement isn't received as expected/there's radio...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

While I'm reluctant to give the MBTA much benefit of the doubt these days....I do believe the recent performance deterioration is at least partially because of ongoing work, not because of the lack of work. ------ From JFK south has had 8:45pm weeknight and/or full weekend shutdowns on some or...
