    Silver Line to Chelsea

First, let me state that the order of DE60LFRs are options that were exercised, using ARRA funds, from ABQ RIDE's contract for the same models. It would have been impossible for the MBTA to require a powered center axle due to the terms of the contract. If the T wanted that requirement, they...

    Silver Line to Chelsea

The T received 155 D40LF buses in 2008. The DE60LFRs were delivered in 2010. And yes, the T knew about the traction issue with those buses. Despite buses being off-the-shelf products, the T still needs to go through a competitive bidding process to ensure that they're getting the best value...

    Silver Line to Chelsea

This requirement was not applied to the previous order of 60' buses because it would have lengthened the procurement process at a time when the T needed new buses fast (New Flyer would have had to redesign the XDE60 with a powered center axle). The T isn't being incompetent; there are no...

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

Yes, that is correct. They were used to test the technology that would eventually be incorporated into the R142/R142A fleets. As for vehicles that are currently in service, I recall that most of the Hong Kong MTR heavy rail vehicles had doorways that were of similar width. They were much wider...

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

Yes. The NYCT R110A cars have 64 inch wide doorways, exactly the same as on the new Red and Orange Line cars.

    Silver Line to Chelsea

    1. Not yet. The DMAs are still being refurbished, with only 11 buses left to go. 2. No. The DMAs have powered center and rear axles, which greatly improves traction. When the roads outside are slippery, they are the only 60 foot buses that are not pulled off the road and, sometimes, one or two...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Orange Line bustitution You mean the test track? It's an active construction site right now and it's missing the third rail between Sullivan Square and Community College.

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

The Green Line Type 10 procurement process has officially begun! The MBTA is soliciting bids for a firm to manage the project. Although we won't see the first of these vehicles for 7-8 years, this is exciting news nonetheless.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Re: new buses That's Worcester. The WRTA isn't the MBTA. The WRTA is a much smaller transit authority. The Neoplan AN440LF fleet is 12-13 years old and is becoming increasingly unreliable. The T can't wait too much longer to order new buses or bus operations would take a hit. To give you an...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Re: new buses It would be unwise for the MBTA to make a large scale order without testing the buses first. Also, the infrastructure for supporting a fleet of battery-electric buses does not yet exist at any MBTA facility.

Chmeeee is correct. The test track is being rehabilitated in anticipation of the arrival of the pilot #14 cars.

On page 6 of this presentation, there is a picture of a pilot A-car for the Orange Line being prepared for shipment.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The initial illustration was only a conceptual rendering from the manufacturer based solely on the RFP specifications. The second image was rendered after much of car shell had been designed with MBTA guidance.

    Silver Line to Chelsea

Yes, they operate using the exact same buses as the SL4/5, but the 39 switches to Arborway's 40-foot buses during evenings. This is why I'm confused as to why asphalt wouldn't be an issue on those 2 "yellow" routes.

    Silver Line to Chelsea

The 28 and 39 have similar headways. Why isn't asphalt an issue on those routes?

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The stanchions are yellow so that people who are color-blind or partially blind can see them more easily. They aren't yellow for aesthetic reasons.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I am not sure about the XE60s, but the XDE60s definitely will not have trolley poles (current collectors); that's why the batteries need to be fully charged before they re-enter the tunnels. I believe the T is trying to get rid of the catenary in the Waterfront tunnels.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

The Silver Line will receive pure-electric buses. There are 5 New Flyer XE60s on order right now. I am not sure if they will be capable of using the catenary in the Waterfront tunnels to charge their batteries. The current long-term solution for the Silver Line is to buy New Flyer XDE60 buses...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Yes, this is a New Flyer XN40 being driven from the factory in Anniston, AL. The MBTA did not activate the route number on it as this bus is not MBTA property until the MBTA accepts it. It's still the property of New Flyer.

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Yes, you should. The MTA's M7 and M8 railcars utilize Mitsubishi propulsion and they form the backbone of the LIRR's and Metro-North's EMU fleets, respectively. However, the reliability and overall performance of the MBTA cars will heavily depend on the systems integrator, CRRC. The propulsion...
