    Wind Turbines in Mass

NECEC is only 1,200 MW of capacity, like a mid-size power plant. We probably need 3-4 NECEC to fill the gap. Planned offshore wind in MA was 5,600 MW by 2027 (now very much in doubt).

    Wind Turbines in Mass

The problem with Canadian hydro or offshore wind is you have to get the electricity to MA -- and that means new transmission capacity through our northern neighbor states (which they have not been very cooperative about).

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Come-on folks --you know there are lots of cables in the T system that are 50-60 years old. That is practically new by MBTA standards.

    Gillette Stadium Transportatio Improvements

Why not just run more event trains? Both SS and Providence. They commonly sell out before the day of the event, suggesting the demand is there. Standard CR schedules don't coordinate well with event timing. And to really attract more customers there needs to be a bar car on the event trains...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

As a comparison, Chinese High Speed Rail from Beijing to Guangzhou, roughly 1,400 miles, takes 8 hours. Do that twice and you have NYC to LA in 16 hours. The only thing "high" about the Ameristar proposal are the people promoting it.

    Green Line Reconfiguration

IIRC you have to approach the current Silver Line South Station tunnel and platform from the Essex Street alignment -- basically crossing the Dewey Square tunnel at Essex. You cannot come up on the east side of the old 93 tunnel, you have to come up on the west side -- basically a Hudson Street...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

There is open land between the Grand Junction and BU Bridge approach that the alignment shown could conceivable use to rejoin the current east bound alignment just before the BU Bridge underpass. You basically hug the eastern side of the Grand Junction as is bends over toward its bridge. That...

Back Bay Station Concourse Renovation Project

If they can just stop the water intrusion into the platform I'll be happy. The damp cave effect on the platform is insane.

Water Transportation in and around Boston

Don't forget, the ferries operating out of Boston don't get to make use of the fastest speeds until well out of the harbor. Within Boston Harbor, speed restriction of 5, 10 or 15 kts apply. And there are the Right Whale restriction zones in Broad Sound (10 kts). So for significant parts of...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

For the travelator between DTX and SS, I believe that the space already exists on top of the Red Line Tunnel -- it is used for storage or something like that? It may not go all the way now due to Big Dig impact. Travelator the Winter Street concourse DTX to Park as well.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

By 1920 Lynn had direct trolley service to Scollay Square via the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway, where you could then transfer to the BERy system.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Continuously Welded Rail reduces the impacts and shocks of the track joints (increasingly irregular with time) on the wheels and other undercarriage components, significantly reducing rolling stock maintenance. It also provides for a smoother ride, even at the lower speed.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The people of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming are very hurt by your neglect of their transit needs! Also, will some of the cars short turn at Park and Government Center, or will all run through to GLX?

    Green Line Reconfiguration

Don't neglect dwell times. When the Green Line is busy trains take a long time in stations allowing passengers to fight their way out of and onto the tight aisle cars. And there is a corner of every car that is "trapped" away from an active door when the boarding changes sides (shift from side...

    Wind Turbines in Mass

New York State is the barrier to a new gas pipeline. Maybe time to do what New York is doing and spin up a new, modern nuke plant.

Suffolk Downs Redevelopment | East Boston/Revere

Except Boston (and Revere) are not in the way here. (Half the site is in Revere.) This site is all approved. And Revere is throwing up housing like Everett around Wonderland. The developer just doesn't have any juice.

Suffolk Downs Redevelopment | East Boston/Revere

Suffolk Downs development cannot be tall or even medium height. It sits right under two Logan runway approach paths for 4L/22R and 4R/22L. It has severe FAA "hazard to aviation" height restrictions.

52 Plympton Street | South End

The as-of-rights zoning for this part of Harrison-Albany (Back Streets area) is 100 ft. 120ft if you can get a PDA approved (this would not qualify). 200 ft. PDA is possible only on the other side of Albany Street here. (The allowed heights vary a lot along different sections of the...

    MBTA Construction Projects

I would argue this happens in Boston where there is a logical candidate development to connect to. Many downtown stations don't have a logical connection candidate. Back Bay connects to Copley Place Prudential connects to the Prudential Mall North Station connects to North Station South...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Yes, it SHOULD be a normal course of business. But historically coordination has been very poor. Dotted lines on org charts do not mean people actually talk to each other.
