ArchBoston Book Club (Book #1 - Abundance)

(For those holding out on buying, I noticed today by chance there's an Audiobook version for free available on Spotify Premium)

Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

We need to procure a planner for a study, which will include 3 years of community engagement, and another year to develop the report. Then we need to scope out the project and include it in the new masterplan, and then once funded, we can procure a designer, and include a 3-year community...

    Grounding the McGrath

Definitely worth getting clarification - the "what if" render with the ADA ramp (not proposed) has a different looking fence. Maybe this is because of the pedestrian bridge, but maybe it's the intended fence: I can appreciate a 2-3 ft fence, but if this is the intent it definitely introduces...

Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

I think the graffiti artists have done more work on this than the workers the past year or so.. (on the back/rail side)

Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

Lesley just sold them recently to an affordable housing developer. By-right height of buildings with 100 percent affordable units is 15-stories in this location. (12 stories along roads like Mass Ave, 15 in squares).

Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

Oh man... prepare for the NIMBYs... I personally love it. I loathe that parking lot and strip mall. Though at the same time, I think some low-rise high-density development would be really successful here.

New-build classical architecture (evoking old styles)

Loses the appeal with the huge asymmetrical window panes for me. Otherwise, looks pretty good.

Tufts Residence Hall | 401 Boston Avenue | Medford

It really is quite a bulky set of buildings. Doesn't seem like the board was that happy to approve it either. Housing 700 more students is pretty impressive though, and combined with Davis Sq's 500 unit proposal, there could finally be some slight pricing alleviation in the area. I think the...

What are those trailer offices for in the foreground?

975 Boylston | Mass DOT Parcel 13 | Boylston & Mass Ave | Back Bay

Hm, I guess their ask for $500K per affordable unit from the Infrastructure Bill didn't go through... Did Peebles originally win this based on including 100% affordable housing? I can't seem to find the original proposals. The design looks nice - It's intriguing there's no sign of the Pike...

Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

This is my thinking - this might be the right size for hockey-specific events. Agganis and the Tsongas Center typically weren't filling up on game days a few years ago. And the basketball court having more seats is a symptom of the court size, likely not attendance demand.

I'm torn.. It'd be a really cool beer hall.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I know this has likely been explained before, but how does this work with an Amtrak ticket? Does it accept their code as well?

    🔹 What's Happening With Project X?

Would love to get a thread started on this once there are details. You'd figure with a new building project starting in 3 months there'd be some detail, apart from a start date. I walked by the site this weekend and looks like the contractor's pretty much done with early utility work. There's a...

Wentworth Institute of Technology | Institutional masterplan

The apple-store massing entrance is more defined now as well: Doesn't rank highly in my book to be honest.

Davis Square Somerville Infill and Small Development

That doesn't seem terrible - It's 3 3-bedroom units on top of retail, essentially a triple-decker with a perhaps ~5-10% larger footprint/floor area, with retail on the base. The design and materials though...

Idea for fixing the housing shortage

I have to ask why we are considering building out a few thousand to hundred-thousand units in Devens MA when we have 27 gateway cities pretty nicely balanced across the state begging for re-investments, jobs, housing, and connectivity... I'd be jumping up and down if we announced 25K new housing...

    NYC Architecture and Development

Millenium/Winthrop Sq in Boston is probably throwing a fit - that was one of their big selling points. Regardless, it's gotta be hard to meet passive housing standards with such large amounts of glass. From afar, looks like it was inspired by 432 Park Ave. Up close, it has some interesting...

Natural Gas (LNG, Pipelines, & Distribution)

The Volts podcast is great, this episode from Friday covers MA DPU's direction to shift away from gas: The Massachusetts utility regulator trying to orchestrate a shift away from gas I plan on listening to it this week, but I also listened to this podcast on Thermal Energy Networks from a while...
