What to do about Government Center

OK, you want more people, is this enough?! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palio_di_Siena Seriously though, there are always plenty of people/activity going on at the Campo and if you were there you would never think or feel that there is so much empty/wasted space. Even if you were the only...

What to do about Government Center

I think the simplest/best solution to solving the barren wasteland that is Government Center would be a required field trip by all the necessary powers/planners that be to the Piazza del in Siena. By surrounding and enclosing the current wasteland of a space with appropriately scaled...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

dbhstockton, brilliant article, thanks. Should be required reading for anyone involved with the current debacle that is the RKG.

Is that Russia/Atlantic Wharf going up in that first Houston picture?!

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Been there since at least the mid-80's (college days!). It has a small patio area in front that you walk down to (its a basement level bar) that you would remember if this was the place.

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Ablarc, I think you might be referring to Shay's. Still there and still one of the few decent places left in the Square for a tasty pint!

Mandarin Oriental | 776 Boylston St | Back Bay

Its tough to say whether that's limestone or concrete.. However, as that looks to be the back of the building, if that is indeed concrete, I would be fairly confident it is only because its the back and the front and sides will be natural cut stone. It has always been the rule rather than...

New England?s First Modernist House Destroyed

Newton has one too. You have to wait a year after you apply to get a demolition permit. I think its a good idea. Although you still see them, I think Newton has proportionally, a lot fewer tear downs and subsequent McMansions. This ordinance is a big reason why.

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I think the best example in the country (at least as far as I know!) of what this market could be is Pike Place in Seattle. It is a very cool, interesting and thriving market that, being about as close to the water as a Greenway site, is a very good comp. http://www.pikeplacemarket.org

    115 Federal St. (Winthrop Square)

Merper, I actually really like the bottom one! How does the bat tower sound?

    115 Federal St. (Winthrop Square)

The more I look at it, the tower portion itself isn't too horrible. It looks to have a fairly interesting, high-quality skin. It is the completely flat top, in combination with an essentially square tower, that really drags it down for me. A much more dynamic and original top/crown would do...

    In defense of Boston

I couldn't agree with Dude more. I love Boston as much as anyone on this board and honestly think it is a top 5 US city no matter which way you slice it. That said, I must say that I strongly agree with 99% of what Ablarc has to say, almost to the point that I sometimes believe he is reading...

Mandarin Oriental | 776 Boylston St | Back Bay

The Pru entrance is simply a finger-like extension off of the Pru shops, definitely not what I would consider to be any type of street wall. If you look at the site plan posted a few pages back, you will see that the Mandarin's street wall does in fact line up neatly with Lord & Taylor, the...
