465 Congress Street | Portland

Any ideas on why there are identical holes in the brick facade above every other floor? I'm guessing to support scaffolding in the future?

All the way from 295 I could make out some scaffolding work being done. At night the building is lit up with construction lighting on every floor which has been a nice addition.

Appreciate the photo and scaffolding is a wonderful thing! The M&T signs should be coming down in the near future.

When 477 starts its renovation project, that grey exterior staircase will be gone. An ugly aspect to that building.

Will the hotel be adding a large sign to the top of this building when open? Would be cool to have something new and similar in size (maybe a little bigger and less cookie cutter) to the M&T Bank sign.

Good question. I was told that the current signage was grandfathered back to the Maine Bank & Trust days and that the historic preservation board would not approve another sign on the roof once M&T's grace period expires. They felt that that any sign at that level would interfere with cohesive design of the architectural corner projections. Personally, I agree with the Congress Street opinion but wouldn't have an issue on the back side of the building facing the interstate. An M&T rep told me a few weeks ago that the bank is responsible for the costs to remove the signs and it isn't cheap.

Markhb and myself were mysteriously removed from archBOSTON a few weeks ago for no apparent reason and efforts to restore 16 years of contributing were futile. So I've rejoined as a "new member" and will proceed forward as if nothing ever happened! :)

Glad to see you posting again. I had the same experience.

When this building is done and ready for guests, it will be THE go-to night spot in the city. A bar at the top and a speakeasy in the bank vault in the basement? And if the Old Port Square hotel/condos/rooftop space is built, I'd say where else in New England other than Boston will you have something comparable to both combined? Not Providence, and certainly not Hartford. FYI, in Boston go visit the new Raffles Hotel bars and restaurants on the 19th floor. Wow.

Overlooking a prison yard, though. They've got to make Monument Square more inviting, could start by figuring out something better than harsh flood lights.

I don't know if this totally applies to the point you're trying to make, but Providence has a place called "Rooftop at the Providence G" that is above condos.

That does look and feel nice, though the views will not be as good as the two new Portland rooftop bar/restaurants with the busy harbor and Casco Bay on one side, and the White Mountains on the other. I realize that this image was created with a telephoto lens, but still, those mountains are there (Maine Imaging). And I still think that if you take a new hi-rez photo of this scene and put it up at the Jetport baggage area, no one is turning around to go back home (or wants to).
