Technology behemoth Amazon.com Inc. will no longer occupy about half of an office in Boston’s Seaport District, where it once planned to hire 3,000 people. Amazon is subleasing about 375,000 square feet of 1 Boston Wharf Road, a 17-story building the company was slated to fully occupy next year.
Amazon’s partial exit from the space comes less than a year after CEO Andy Jassy moved leadership of the company’s Alexa AI development from Boston to Seattle. Rohit Prasad, who’d been running that group in the Seaport, left at the end of last year. (This week, he joined the Waltham robotics firm Boston Dynamics as chief executive.)
Amazon’s Seaport “tech hub” was big news back in 2022. An adjacent property at 111 Harbor Way has 480,000 square feet and is occupied by Amazon employees.
That first lease was set to receive some $25 million in state and city tax breaks in exchange for creating thousands of jobs, but there was no similar agreement for the 1 Boston Wharf office.
