American Repertory Theater | 175 North Harvard Street | Allston

I could have written much the same post. It is clear that the facility itself will be significantly better. I guess we have to hope that the surrounding area moves forward with the theater. And really, there is evidence that this is happening. It might not be immediate, but much like the ICA relocation to what was at the time a rather desolate spot, this could ultimately be another example of art institutions leading the way.
Transit access to the new location sucks. 25 minute walk from Harvard. Or a bus  . No thanks -- ART lost me on this one.

Okay, that's too bad. But for most people, the current location also sucks for transit. If you don't live in Cambridge, downtown, or elsewhere on the Red Line, Harvard Square can be a long trip on the T. Just using myself as an example, Harvard Square is only 7 minutes faster by transit. And bike is faster to both locations, but it's 10 minutes faster to Allston compared to Harvard Square.

But I'll be honest, the past several productions I've seen at the ART involved driving. Even though I don't drive often, that's a trip that usually makes more sense for me by car when you consider that there are likely multiple people, fancier clothing, and a need for flexibility. Allston is significantly better for parking. So while I prefer the idea in theory of everybody arriving by bike or transit, most patrons are driving.

People rarely go to the theater alone. I would imagine that there would be at least twice as many people in each individual car compared to those on the Mass Pike at rush hour.
