Mayor Announces Roslindale Community Meeting to Review Draft Zoning

Seeks Input from Community Before Zoning is Adopted

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Redevelopment Authority are pleased to announce that the City will host a community meeting to discuss the draft of a new Roslindale zoning article on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Roslindale Community Center, located at 6 Cummins Highway. The meeting is an opportunity for BRA staff to receive feedback on the draft zoning, which is the direct result of the Roslindale Neighborhood Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan was adopted by the City after a two-year community planning process. Roslindale's zoning has not been updated since the 1950s. Once the new zoning is vetted with the community, it will need further approvals from the BRA Board and the Zoning Commission before adoption.

"Creating this new zoning -- with the Strategic Plan as our roadmap -- is part of our overall effort to enhance Roslindale's vibrant commercial districts, give our existing shopping destinations a face-lift, and make the neighborhood an even better place to call home," Mayor Menino said. "I want to encourage the community to attend this meeting and give us their feedback as their input is invaluable to us."
BRA Director John F. Palmieri added, "We're excited to bring the draft zoning language to the community in order to hear their comments. This meeting brings us one step closer to modernizing Roslindale's zoning."
In October 2007, the BRA Board approved the 76-page Strategic Plan, which was crafted hand-in-hand with the community, city staff, consultants and City Councilor Rob Consalvo's office, to yield improved zoning and community planning recommendations. Additionally, Mayor Menino appointed an Advisory Group to work with the BRA throughout the process, which included 14 working sessions and four community-wide meetings.

About the Draft Zoning
Overall goals of the Roslindale Neighborhood District Zoning include:
* to provide adequate density controls that protect established residential areas and direct growth to areas where it can be accommodated;
* to retain and develop affordable, moderate income, and market rate housing compatible with adjacent areas, particularly for families;
* to promote the viable neighborhood economy;
* to preserve, maintain and create open space;
* to protect the environment and improve the quality of life;
* to promote the most appropriate use of land;
* to promote the public safety, health, and welfare of the people of Boston.
Elements of the draft zoning include language regarding new zoning sub-districts, higher maximum density and height in commercial zones, increased residential parking ratios, mandatory BRA design review and community notification for as-of-right projects, improved design guideline standards, and open space minimum requirements.
