Building evacuated in Boston; cracks in walls
August 5, 2006
BOSTON --A building in downtown Boston was evacuated Saturday after cracks were discovered along the outer walls, fire officials said.
The seven-story brick building at the corner of Milk and Broad streets has a sushi restaurant, Sakurabana, on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors.
Boston Fire District Chief George Bishop said people were ordered out of the building at about 1 p.m. He said only six people were living there. A sign on the front of the building advertises corporate rentals.
"They told us that the building will fall down," said Abdullah Almutairi, who has lived in the building for the past month with his wife and several children.
No injuries were reported. Authorities cordoned off the area around the building, and ordered parked cars to be towed.
"We want to make sure no one was hurt by things falling off," Bishop said.
Bishop said firefighters were in the area responding to a water main break when passersby told them of visible cracks in the building. City engineers and inspectors were on scene.
It wasn't immediately clear who owns the building, or how old it is.
