Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Mixed use density is good. However, I will miss the adaptive reuse of a quirky early automotive era building.

Is it being demolished? Aren't those debris chutes usually for a renovation?

Ex-Lyndell's (aka Carberry's) outside of Central is fenced off and looks like it is headed for demolition.

This location has a curse on it. Every store that has occupied it in the 12 years I've lived in the area has failed. Hopefully this will help.

So many quality establishments have tried and failed in this location. Its time for something else. This land could be used for something better.

The Porter Square Hotel is stalled at 99% complete, and the Beacon St hotel just got its foundation poured, so I guess it's time for contractor to give the condos across from Porter Exchange some love.

Stalled at 99% suggests a certificate of occupancy problem. Some sort of code issue?

Anybody know what's going in there (did I miss it earlier in the thread)? I've been hoping for this site to be redeveloped for years.

Via Urban Liberty:
M&H Realty Trust has applied for a special permit to build an apartment building at 305 Webster Ave in Cambridge, at its intersection with Columbia Street. The site has an area of 18,140 square feet and the proposed project will have 37,510 square feet. In addition to 35 apartments, the project will have 1,780 square feet of retail on the ground floor.
...
A public hearing on the proposal will be held 7:00 pm September 27 at the City Hall Annex in Cambridge.

1 parking spot + 1.25 bike spots per unit.

^ Very nice. Plan is to keep the existing buildings as a retail podium with basement parking, then build new housing set back on top.

Walked by the site tonight and Big John's is now just a hole in the ground.

I'd expect that whole chop-shop stretch of Webster heading towards to Union to really redevelop over the next decade.

I'm all for these redevelopments, but at a certain point, all of the autobody & auto-mechanics that are getting blown up are going to be felt in the market.

The 305 Webster thing is interesting. I could've sworn there was a sign on the building offering it for sale stating that the new project had been approved...

^^ What is the huge parking garage for that's on Columbia but visible from Webster? It couldn't possibly all be for the new-ish residential development on Webster, and the area is otherwise the middle of nowhere.
