Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Nice example of universal design with that one. The new triple decker lacks the front steps of the older one.

Great zoning in action here. FAR is above base zoning but allowed to exceed due to being in Central Sq overlay AND from the inclusionary bonus (3.0 at base, proposed at >4.5!). No parking required and none proposed, only a few variances needed for setbacks. Build the HELL out of this thing and expand it to the adjacent surface lot.

If only the cladding were working as well as the zoning...

Also definitely can't build on that parking lot. It's part of Market Central and I believe it has a flood storage tank under it.

A special permit application just posted for a 22-unit residential building near Central Square (behind the recent Market Central development; 48-50 Bishop Allen Dr.)

Love to see balconies on low to mid-rise buildings--it's something that seems far too rare in new construction here in Boston and can really add to street life and general positive aesthetics!

Colantonio Renovates 116 Norfolk Street in Cambridge

116 Norfolk Street

“Cambridge, MA – Construction Manager Colantonio Inc. has begun construction on the Revitalization of 116 Norfolk StreetProject for the Cambridge Housing Authority.
The project, designed by HMFH Architects, is a gut rehab of a 4 1/2-story masonry building that was originally constructed in 1907.
Colantonio will convert the 38 single room occupancy units into studio apartments and build a 25,000 square foot, wood frame addition to house another 24 studio apartments.
The building will receive a new common kitchen, waste disposal system, and an expanded laundry room. A new all-electric variable refrigerant flow heating and cooling system will also be installed.
The new units will provide housing for people who have experienced chronic homelessness and/or are elderly or living with disabilities.”

Skyline in east Cambridge and Inman Sq is changing.
It would be nice to get some mid-rise residential development (w/retail on the ground floor) in and around Inman Square, as it is fairly close to the Union Square GLX station. I know it would be a leap for East Cambridge NIMBYs, but after all, Inman Square is a lively area already, not some quiet residential street, and mid-rise residential/retail would fit right in, IMO.

Only in Cambridge is there an Alan Turing tavern. Inman Sq. I had to google his signature to verify. Perhaps there’s also one in Cambridge, UK - where he’s from. I still miss Bukowskis tho.
