Cambridge Housing Authority looking for more properties​

Fresh from purchases in the Baldwin neighborhood, city agency may make three more deals.

“After buying three parcels that will let it create up to 110 low-income housing units, the Cambridge Housing Authority is seeking to purchase more properties, it was disclosed on Thursday.

On Jan. 14, CHA director of planning and development Margaret Donnelly Moran said the authority had purchased three parcels on Mellen St. from Lesley University and planned to create 90 to 110 housing units for low-income families. Those three parcels, known as 31-37 Mellen St., include four buildings, and cost $13 million. It was revealed Thursday that the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust will contribute $9.8 million toward the purchase, an amount approved last fall while the authority was negotiating with Lesley….”

It's great that it has 6 floors (not five) in a residential neighborhood of shorter buildings. Even Winchester couldn't accept a sixth floor on a residential unit in its downtown.
Cambridge is looking up.

I love the height. Hopefully this sets the precedent for placing buildings of this height or taller in Cambridge neighborhoods.

The CRA on Thursday voted to select a developer for 2326 Mass Ave - 6 story building (Mass Ave zoning allows for 8 by right), containing 16 condo units, 3 deed restricted affordable, no retail. They're selling the site to the developer at a discount as a subsidy for the affordable units, and providing a low interest construction loan. Targeting a sale price of 800k/unit, this replaces an ca1881 house and appears to eliminate it's curb cut. May it be the first of many on this corridor.

Cambridge Friends has been having some serious issues with enrollment and staffing. I’m not surprised that they are monetizing their property. The rest of the property may become available before too long.

The lot abuts Huron Avenue, and on the plans it looks like there will be access directly to/from Huron Ave. So that should reduce the impact to the Wyman Rd. cul-de-sac.

Looks like neighbors have applied for a landmark designation on the existing building which is ca. ~1920. It's going before the commission in a couple weeks

It looks like Wyman Rd is a private way. I wonder why this lot isn't governed within the 5 other properties? I'm sure something as small as changing the company who plows the street has to go in front of the 'board'.
