The Archdiocese of Boston has filed detailed plans for a three-building, 217-unit residential complex at Tremont Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard in Roxbury on the grounds of St. Katherine Drexel Church. Read more.
Awesome news. This stretch is really starting to fill in with this, tremont crossing finally moving fwd, the whittier choice tower u/c, and the northeastern dorm. Getting this corner parking lot filled in is a needed addition. That being said though the ground level looks good but the tower is definitely not the greatest looking tower ever. Still though good to see another mid rise housing tower.
In some other thread I can't immediately find, someone was posting an article about being able to build larger buildings by taking away road space from cars. This lot was one that came to mind at the time. That slip lane from Tremont onto Melnea Cass (plus the resulting pedestrian island) is sooo big. Getting rid of it would allow a bigger footprint for a building, and also start improving the pedestrian space at that intersection.
Not criticizing this project. Happy to see it moving forward. But that's a missed opportunity.
I mean, hooray for something getting built here, but for the love of god, can we please forget about all the useless greenspace and just build a streetwall?
