Screening and discussion of the documentary film “The Conservation of Matter: The Rise and Fall of Boston’s Elevated” with Boston filmmaker Tim Wright.

"Conservation of Matter" (30 minutes) traces the fate of 100,000 tons of steel from the Boston Elevated Subway (Orange Line), which was erected in 1898, demolished in 1987, then shipped eight thousand miles away to Osaka, Japan, where it is melted and reformed into steel bars. These products then crossed the ocean again, where they were ultimately re-fabricated into a breathtaking new structure in the middle of Apache country in central Arizona.

Winner: Editing Award, 1996 New England Film/Video Festival; Winner: Audience Choice and Judge’s Grand Prize, 1997 U.S. Super 8mm Film/Video Festival
