Arguably the least Gateway-ie of the Gateway Cities, Haverhill has a large geographic area that centers around the Merrimack River and a solid middle-class population. Home to about 64,000 people, Haverhill was a major shoe manufacturing hub. Today it has a well preserved healthy and mostly vibrant Downtown, although there are too many surface parking lots spread between its towering impressive mill buildings. Also, the city has not fully recovered from some short-sighted urban renewal projects that demolished significant parts of the Downtown. Haverhill does enjoy one of the best located commuter rail stations in the MBTA system, smack dab in the center of Downtown, and a riverside boardwalk was recently constructed connecting several redevelopment projects. These photos are focused on the Downtown area.

Great photos! What's the name of that place with the yellow umbrellas out back?

Great photos @Smuttynose! Curious what makes you Haverhill is, "the least Gateway-ie of the Gateway Cities"?

I feel like it’s probably code for “nicest Gateway City”.

I might prefer Salem or New Bedford, though. Maybe Malden or Everett if Boston-adjacent Gateway Cities are on the table.

Yeah, exactly this, in that a majority of the City does not appear to be distressed or especially challenged socio-economically. I tend to think of the Gateway Cities as the original eleven outside the immediate Boston area as it's challenging to keep up with the evolving state definitions.
