It's criminal that this was allowed to be torn down:

The current German government is moving as swiftly to erase the most prominent icons of the DDR as the DDR did to wipe out the "symbols of fascist imperialism" that Germany is now rebuilding.
 
I actually really liked how the Palace of the Republic looked, although the real crime was loosing the Stadtschloss. Now we get neither.
 
I thought they were rebuilding the Stradtschloss, no?
 
^ They're rebuilding the shell of it. Essentially the facade. There wasn't money to reproduce the whole thing, and it needed an economic purpose to be feasible - so it'll be a museum-slash-convention center, with as much open floorspace inside as possible.

The Palast der Republik was way cooler inside than out. I wish they'd preserved the chandeliers and the people's bowling alley at least. Too bad the whole thing was caked in asbestos.
