GrandMarc Residence Hall (YMCA) @ Northeastern U | 291 St. Botolph Street | Fenway

Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

Yup! Starting to lay the horizontal beams for those floors down as well. It actually looks quite nice from a massing perspective on the narrow ends.

I expect a little more height from mechanicals but we're just about done with this growing. I'll have photos later.

Topping out ceremony at one. I'll be there as it'll probably be my last best chance to see Hizzonah before he leaves office.

One or two from yesterday, and a few from the topping out ceremony today:

I don't really understand the lighter panels

Trying to be contextual with the building next door?

Base rendering from the program:

And these two

It's the same material used on the Kensington, but I prefer the color and (relative) detailing in the cladding here. I just hope whatever pattern they're starting isn't "random", as the trend seems to be these days.

Great picture of the CSC reflecting pool by the way. CSC is one of the few mega projects of the 1970's that has aged well. I hope they don't futz it up with the planned changes.

I wonder will NU ever buy the two CSC buildings thay now mostly occupy under lease. It would be the best "back office" site of any university.

TomoBo -- Agree CSC has aged well -- However, the end toward the Pru was always the weak link

The view across the CSC Plaza toward the Pru from Symphony Hall which should have been one the iconic view of Boston was always dominated by the relative ugliness of the Pru Tower.

Later as the Huntington Ave cluster of the "small packing box" and even later "R2D2" were added to the skyline -- things didn't improve

I think that the planned CSC Towers could provide the right kind of background effectively screening the Pru from the vantage point of Symphony Hall

From a distance, the Hilton looks like a prison.

I completely agree I've thought that so many times. It is by far one of the worst buildings in the city, too bad it is in such a prominent position.

@Timmay. Nice picture. Looks like the campus of a prep school rather than Boston.

At least the color isn't drab. I suppose it has the virtue of being not quite as ugly as International Village.

Why couldn't they build another 440 Huntington?

That is a great question. After the success and aesthetic appeal of the West Village complex, one would think that Northeastern would shell out a little more money for that level of quality everywhere...

Not to make excuses for my school, but it is also a very constrained site back there, so I can't see the massing much different. Either way, it certainly could have been done better.

GW, to answer your question a little bit, it looks like we will be getting that quality with developments down the road.

Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

Northeastern didn't pay more to upgrade the aesthetic because it isn't owned by Northeastern. This is a private firm affiliated with Lincoln Property.
