The proposal to develop the former Providence Journal Building and adjacent building that once housed Kresge's is apparently still alive as the developers are asking for a new tax subsidy plan. The owners had originally wanted to convert these properties into a Hotel Hive but changed course after Covid and now are proposing housing with retail and bar space on the ground floor. The former Journal Building was built in the Beaux-Arts style in 1906 and housed the paper for 30 years until it moved to its current location on Fountain Street. The building over the last 80 years has had several retail tenants with it more recently being vacant. Its magnificent facade was sadly once covered over but was thankfully restored to its original grandeur.
