No, I'm with Dude on this on one ( ).

One of the best American authors since Hemingway passes away and CNN, et al. decides this crap is a bigger story.
Between this and the ANS, Britney Spears and AI bullshit, American media has really reached a new low. The last thing we need to do is follow their lead and pretend we are interested in this shit.

Sorry Patrick.

While it could be argued that media firestorm may have become overblown at the expense of some pretty serious news, what Imus says was racist and inexplicably mean. He went out of his way to rip down a great group of people coming off a great success. What possible reason did he have to insult them? To do it using the terms he used just reveals something pretty dark in him.

Bottom line for me: Imus was way out of line, and I think this discussion is a proxy for a discussion of race in this country. The real question should be, "Is taking shots at successful people because they're female and black out of line?"

Thank you...Imus was more or less a way to open a discussion on something far more important than his actual comment...and I figured with all the gabbing about it lately in the press it would be an ideal time to bring it up.

clearly, none of the dozens of people who have viewed this thread care about what he said.

though I see where both dude and statler are going with their comments, my question was not in regards to if Imus was more news worthy than other issues. clearly the "infotainment" that makes up the american media is mostly profit driven, and American idol and Imus are the result. who cares about them? apparently a majority of viewers/listeners/readers, as their coverage would seem to imply. but more importantly, and back on topic, is the question of (even if it is indeed not news worthy)....was imus out of line or not? its a simple question, and at least one person has answered it. I am curious as to where the board stands because i have heard a far ranging spectrum of answers about this.

Totally out of line. Nobody deserves to be called a "ho" on national TV and radio.

i think its tough to call the rutgers women's basketball team a bunch of nappy headed ho's they are almost certainly 75-85% carpetmunchers. guaranteed.

I hate niggers and spicks.

^If I said that comment, would that mean that the entire world should jump on my back and beat me up for it? No. Because I'm not that important.

Use some common sense, people. DUH, of course what he said was offensive. Stop using that as an argument because you sound like idiots. Nobody is arguing against you. The point is that a comment that one senile, 90 year old radio guy no one's ever heard of makes does not deserve national attention.

Contrary to your assumption, I find what you have posted above, regardless of the context, very offensive and think you should be mature enough to delete it out of respect for the groups of people it would offend.

He should be, but he isn't, and he won't.

So I'm sitting at the bar, and an African-American friend comes in and sits down next to me. I ask,

"What's going on."

"My daughter's team just won the high school championship." Takes out a photo.

"Wow, that's some nappy-headed ho."

But there is no reason to say that regardless of context on this architectural forum. Newspapers would not even print something like that. If you want to rant, rave, and spew out whatever comes out of your mouth, start a blog so we can all avoid it.

On the substance:

This is an absurd claim. Imus was one of the very few nationally syndicated radio personalities. This isn't some jackass on a Boston forum. This is the kind of guy who regularly gets presidential candidates and influential people on his show. He's a superstar in the radio business.

Also on the substance:

You're a pretty ignorant guy.

Your argument is odd, too, dude.

you're saying no one would jump on your back for saying that because you're not important, and then you say no one should be jumping on Imus's back because he's unheard of.

First, people ARE jumping on his back, so your reasoning for others not to jump on your back for making a similar comment breaks down right there.

Second, he's not unheard of. Ceary you don't understand the situation here. There is a reason he is now known as Don Imus my job?

IMHO, Imus said the same insulting crap he says all the time and by his own admission he even hired someone to specifically make those type of jokes. He pushed the envelope and this time it caught up with him. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. When confronted he tried to play it down but that didn't work so he got his people on the horn to Jackson and Sharpton looking for absolution but it only made it seem like a bigger deal in the eyes of the public. Finally sagging ratings and threats to boycott his advertisers eventually cost him his job.

The Fox News crowd, Howie Carr and Ku Klux Kallaghan now have their panties in a bunch because they could be next...Boo friggin' Hoo!

What I don't understand about racists and biggots is, why don't they understand how much the world would improve (for everyone) if things were different?
