Kennebec Block

I just hope Peter Munro and his gang from Keep Portland Livable don't come out of the woodwork on these projects. Just remember 10 years ago they proposed 4 buildings at 165ft then lowered to 72ft, 650 apartments to 440!!! but we have a local person versus a Miami Co (Federated Cos), cross my fingers...

Imagine how cool it would be to have the Kennebec Block, Roux Institute, Herald Square, Canal Plaza tower, Portland Foreside, Lancaster/Elm Street project, Portland Museum of Art expansion and the rehab of 465 Congress Street and the Time & Temperature Building all happening within a few years of each other! Have kind of given up on Portland Square, did I miss anything else?
With the GND expiring in 2025, and the Recode in place, you should see a new Portland Square Project submitted next year...

Here's a factoid: Maine is one of the five places in the world where you can ski and surf in the same day traveling by car (April). I've done it, though in Southern California. Promote that one.
TC, I'm officially promoting you as the new "most interesting man in the world" effective immediately! (y)

I was looking up aerial photos for the bigger New England cities? If everything happens that we think is gonna happen, does that make us the 3rd most impressive downtown from the sky besides Boston and Hartford? We’re already past Manchester ,Springfield and Worcester even though they have taller buildings . Could you argue that Portland looks bigger than Providence once this hopefully all gets built?

Answer is not even close in my opinion and I'm basing my views on actually "walking the streets" and disregarding building heights even though that is also an important factor when it comes to an urban vibe. I get what you are saying Portcity because the core of downtown Providence is kind of fenced in due to Interstate 95 and the river but when you view it from any angle it's no joke! Brown University (lower right) is like a separate downtown of its own and the state capital area (right) isn't even in this screenshot. I also think you are underestimating the urban density of Springfield and Worcester and may also want to take another look from above when it comes to New Haven and Stamford. As far as Portland goes, it has an impressive downtown for a city of only 70,000 and is probably the most popular metro area north of Boston but it will never be able to compete with the legacy "big boy" cities of southern New England nor does it need to. Yeah I didn’t see that angle

Can anyone think of a city under 100k population that’s bigger looking?

Portcity, a few cities for you to check out that have less than 100K with dense downtowns and impressive skylines for their size: Greenville, SC, Charleston, WV, Asheville, NC, Harrisburg, PA, Binghamton, NY, Huntington, WV and Jackson, MI. The smallest city with the tallest skyline (thanks to Phillips Petroleum) might just be Bartlesville, OK with only 38K. Battle Creek, MI (cereal) is another small city that has bragging rights to two 20 story art deco towers! Like Portland, many of these municipalities have very small city limits which keep the population counts considerably less than their counterparts but their metropolitan populations (MSA) can be substantial in comparison. Enjoy exploring! 👍

I got a buddy in Greenville and he says it’s right up my alley

Again in my hypothetical I was envisioning Portland with Canal tower, Portland square, Thompson point , rock row, Portland foreside and all the bayside buildings being done .

Understood, but many of us on here have seen numerous lofty proposals that never materialized during the past 40 plus years so don't get too excited until the foundations are poured. Good news is that the Roux Institute is really going to happen and if the Canal Plaza tower actually gets built at 283' or taller it will be a game changer for Portland's skyline!

You gotta shake it off, the Greenville metro area has close to a million people so its arena size meets the needs of northeast South Carolina. Portland's arena is undersized for our 566K metro area but the city has blown a few opportunities to have a 10,000 seat venue and so we are stuck with an 8,000 seat building that was renovated in 2014. Can't win them all!
