The Amtrak Keystone connection to Philly is what really seals the deal. Lancaster itself is very small but super walkable, and if you want big-city stuff, Philly is just an hour or so away on the train!
 
Honestly think mid-Atlantic rowhouse urbanism is the best the country has to offer.
The small cities/large towns of the mid-Atlantic area (Pennsylvania/Maryland/Delaware/eastern West Virginia) are my favorite places in the US. I went to that entire area in late May and absolutely loved it.
