Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Yea some times I wish there was a common sense police.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Well, I wasn't expecting that...

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Disagree, John. If you have an opinion? Own it. If you want to be neutral, then do that. A winked bias toward NABBsters only encourages their unhealthy practices.

I disagree again. If you have an opinion write an op-ed. If you want to write an even keeled article reporting news, do as you are doing and be a journalist.

I'm sick of opinion being force fed to us and called news. I got nearly sick sitting at a Newark airport bar last night (nothing to do with the food or hairspray residue in the air) because they had HLN on. I have never watched such an insulting show that claimed to be news. Some 3 named latino lady was yelling about a whole bunch of stuff.... it was actually upsetting to me.

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/issues.with.jane/

have never wanted to strangle an on-air personality as much as this lady.

Sorry for the off topic. Boo shadow laws. Yay common sense. Ok back on track.

It doesn't claim to be news. The link you provided describes the show:
Jane Velez-Mitchell takes a stand on some of the most emotionally charged ISSUES of the day.

Due respect to John (who I've met several times professionally, and is a nice guy), but my point is yours: write an op-ed or write a straight news article.

The recent nonsense with Keith Oberman on MSNBC got me laughing. He's not reporting news, he's a commentator. Why the fuss over a political contribution? No one in their right mind thinks he's non-partisan, or even a random Joe reporting news.

Same thing goes for John: if he wants to provide commentary or opinion, that's great. Riding the slippery edge between commentary and straight news is impossible slope tho. Anderson Cooper does it well, but then again he's lived his entire live in the closet and knows when to break out the double entendres and when not to.

I thought that, even if John was trying to write a straight news article, it failed in that it gave too much weight to the opinions of the crazy shadow people, without ever actually saying if he supported their view.

It's a fine line.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I think it's funny that you single out Olbermann, since he's largely a response to Fox News (not to deny that he's an intolerable jackass, which he is, but I think that's the case for virtually anyone on a 24 hour news network).

Anyway, I agree with your main point. Keep bias out of the news. Opine in an opinion piece.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I miss Olberman on Sportscenter anyways. Him and Dan Patrick were the dream team.

My point about Issues, was that it's on Head Line News. That the station name right? And it says news all over the screen when that jackass is yapping. I also only brought it up because it was fresh in my head and made me ill. When she was talking about a kidnapped family and the "suspect" it had the banner "Breaking News" under it. That is irresponsible reporting as she was referring to the "suspect" as a sicko and a weirdo and a whole slew of other garbage. What was worse was all the women working the bar were eating it up.

All national news outlets can suck it. I watch channel 5 in the morning and that's about it. Nothing big comes out of it, but when the President of the channel comes on, he gives an editorial, and it says so at the bottom of the screen and it is prefaced as such. I just find that refreshing. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if you are on a news channel it should always be made clear that what you are saying is opinion.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I don't understand how the city's permitting works.

The BRA's website says it is still in the midst of its Article 80 Review but then how come they've already started demo work and already had a ground-breaking.

Snarky comments appreciated, but if anyone knows the details, that would be helpful.

Some of the others more closely involved in the permitting process could verifiy, but my best recollection is that you can sometimes get demo permits in advance of the conclusion of Article 80 review (perhaps if you meet certain conditions, like financing, etc)

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

So for all anyone knows, this could end up another vacant lot, held up indefinitely?

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

That would make three on that intersection. Damn, I hope that doesn't happen!

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

That's what I was getting at, but drew the opposite conclusion. If they are far enough along with a hole in the ground (but have financing, as Liberty Mutual does) then no one would ever say "No" to a project. Shame.

Salvation Army we hardly knew ye

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Makes me think of Radiohead's "Go to Sleep," subtitled "Little Man Being Erased."

Seems like any semblance of intelligence within Boston's preservation community has gone to sleep...

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

There is no such thing as a preservation community in Boston.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I liked the Salvation Army building but in this case I like the new development better. This stretch between the Back Bay and South End needs to be brought up to the level of the surrounding neighborhoods. Now, if only we could cover the Pike...

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

How is 300 ft of windows looking into a lobby going to bring this area up to the level of surrounding neighborhoods?

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

This area around Stuart St/Columbus Ave and heading south on Arlington St is underdeveloped and feels like a dead zone. This development is a start to fix that. But ultimately what is needed is covering the Pike all the way to 95 South, as well as development further south in the old New York Streets area, to truly knit the city together.
