I guess I didn't realize they were building out over the tunnel. I'm actually kind of surprised it will open back up after this work is completed, it seems superfluous, but I guess it's more work to get rid of it than keep it.

The tunnel needs expensive remediation work and it might not actually open back up

I don't think the volume of traffic going from Salisbury St. to Main St. is much at all, and I'm guessing not enough to justify significant costs to repair the tunnel.

The Grove St. -> Main St. intersection that crosses Highland St. is a mess though. And traffic on Lincoln / Major Taylor / Belmont is brutal at various points during the day and getting worse.

I hate to use the R word here...but a Lincoln Square rotary might be a solution.

They would not have gone through the trouble of building the structure on top of new steel pillars if they don’t plan to use it either for underground delivery bays or parking or if there is some indication that the tunnel will be reopened at an undetermined future date.

We are talking about the underground tunnel portion, the platform over the tunnel and under the building is for resident parking and deliveries

What's old is new again... there was a rotary (ovalary?) in the square until the 80s, which was removed with the construction of Major Taylor Boulevard.

That I what I remember when first attending WPI in 1981. Was a weird oblong shape. Major Taylor Blvd went be the name of Worcester Center Blvd for decades before being renamed
