Good people aren't cheap. $319k isn't a lot of money to manage a city with a $600m annual budget.

Comparing CEO/executive level salaries to average overall salaries is pretty disingenuous and is driven by competition for good talent from the private sector.

Yeah okay Rifleman. We'll take you seriously when you rail against the tax cuts to the wealthy and large corporations that Trump and his administration passed last year, Mr. "No tax breaks for corporations, no tax cuts for corporations!". Until then, you're a joke.

I know I don't want to get involved in this, but aren't about 20% of the seaport and Amazon threads just Rifleman whining about corporate tax breaks?

Yup but when it comes to the current administration's tax breaks that benefits the wealthy at the expense of taxpayers, it's silence.

The wealthy are taxpayers. Also, I'm not wealthy, but I'm getting a very nice reduction in taxes. You can make a very solid argument that the current federal budget is unsustainable, but not that the tax cuts are at the expense of the taxpayers.

Unless spending is also cut/reduced, cutting taxes and increasing spending is at the expense of tax payers as it just kicks the can down the road for the next generation to pay for. Generally, the tax cuts are a wash in MA given the reduced local deductions/etc, and, have a much higher value to higher earners. Plus, the personal tax cuts expire, whereas the corporate cuts are in perpetuity.

I agree with you on this.
I was not for the tax break at this point. Maybe a complete overhaul of the entire IRS tax system would be a good thing. I would like to cut govt spending to the bone. Its time to cleanse the system, balance budgets. I never said Trump was going to do this. I said he was the only shot to doing that since it was between him and Hilary.

The problem you have is Trump is trying to create wage growth and bring back the corporations to this country with better tax incentives. (I don't believe this is possible)

I find it very hard that Apple, Nike, Intel are going to pack up their manufacturing facilities by paying $1 dollar an hour and no healthcare to the Asian workers vs coming back to America getting locked into all this red tape.

Income inequality will continue to plaque the United States at a rapid pace now.

It really comes down to this. If you own a company and you can sell its goods in the United States and manufacturing outside the country for peanuts you would do the same.
I have heard of a lot of well established foreigners who are moving to Boston to be a sales rep for their family manufacturing facility located in India or china.

Trump is just a circus show for the sheep. If he was a real threat to the overall system Trump would not last long. Like I said before he will do good things and he will do bad things. The reality is our country has been couped a long-time ago I believe people just need to be woken up.

Watched this again over the weekend https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060390/. Sadly, as a cautionary tale this will never go out of style and in light of the censorious/anti-free speech tendencies of some here (and much too much of contemporary society) it's appropriate to post. Totalitarianism, if unchecked, is always just around the corner waiting for the next big enough match to bring it back to life. Also HBO has a remake coming out this month.

It's already here. Trump has been trying to ban all media networks that doesn't praise him as a god. Talk about censorship. Also, no one does hush money better than Trump.

I think my problem is that the tax cut is proportionally higher for the wealthy than that poor. It's the idea that I'll justify giving a mansion for the wealthy, but to keep the poor from being angry, I'll give them an extra $1000 for them a year. Except in reality, he is also taking cutting plans dedicated to the poor to pay for the mansions he's giving out to the rich, and you guys fell for that.

And this is why we don’t have a national politics thread.

The rich pay a higher percentage of income in taxes. You can disagree with the fairness of it, but for much of the lower income brackets, there’s just not much there to cut.

Thank you for expressing the exact reason why we can't have nice things in our country. In order to win, the other side must lose. Win-lose. Zero sum. etc etc etc. We are good, and they are bad. We are right, and they are wrong. Your mentality is the biggest reason why struggle to make improvements on the federal level. You want to make "mince meat" out of your competition instead of working understanding their views, and them understanding yours.

I would never close a thread and tell somebody that their ideas wouldn’t matter. That has been the total liberal opposition on this board. Yes... I would have my point of view and agree or disagree but I would still show respect.

It’s beyond winning at this point what is going on in our country is just s form of looting the American people productivity level in a very clever way.

+1. The upper middle class and above pay a lot in taxes. No one's "giving" them anything when the government is taking a portion of what they earned away.

I digress here, and I understand if you only mention mansions as an illustrative point, but can I also just say that big houses aren't all what they're cracked up to be? They're money pits (though I guess it does create a lot of various continuous maintenance, service, contractor, and carpentry jobs that benefit the economy) with high property tax bills. If anyone is going to be angry about something, there are probably other things much more worthwhile than rich people and their big houses. If people have the stomach to live in such money pits and be happy, have at it. Envy would not be on my mind.

Rich people are going to be spending their earned money either way in one form or another. I'd actually rather them put more money into the economy rather than into the government. My bigger issue is non-value added government waste. I know I'd have a much better attitude towards taxes if the government was much more efficient. Cut the excessive waste (ha ha) and lo and behold, there will be more funds for plans dedicated to the less well off.

Public sector unions in MA are corrupt.

I truly believe this is part of the reason Baker has been so hesitant to show a vision or a future plan for the MBTA. There is just too many politics involved in that place.
