Which side of the Building -- is that the Aquarium behind the camera?
 
Are those beams for support of an awning or marquee?

Eithe would be a huge improvement over the wharf bunker-syle -- The original looked like it was designed to repell the Kriegsmarine
 
No shit, jass -- I was there too, around 3PM. I never hang around on the waterfront, but I had a friend in town over the weekend, and we had a couple of pops at The Reef. After, I stopped by the Starbucks in the lobby of the Marriott to grab a pound of coffee. I also wanted to see what they were doing with the renovation. I always liked the glass porte-cochère, and will be interested to see how it's replaced. The new interior looks a bit jarring, taking design cues from Mid-Century.
 
I've always liked this hotel. Could it have been more iconic or inventive? Sure. But as a brick PoMo that aims to mimic wharf architecture, this works well.

modest incremental investment

Wrap the waterfront end with active and inviting uses

20,000 SF/1 story structures

3-4 individual retail/restaurant space

replace opacity with transparency

reinforce state street/walk to the sea

extend faneuil hall marketplace retail "main street"

improve boston harbor islands visitor experience and amenities

Thank God.

I don't mind the building, but with the exception of Tia's that ground level has to be one of the worst possible use of water frontage imaginable. I know Long Wharf wasn't the quite the same place back when it was built, but that brick wall should have been opened decades ago.
 
Corr ct me if I am wrong but the street level space is awkward because the anticipated flooding when they built it, lobby check in is in the 2nd floor etc. and good thing they did because a few times I. Last 10 years it was pretty close to getting flooded Katrina style. I sure as hell would not throw down a million to build a restaurant that is likely to get flooded out.
