Martin's Park | Children's Wharf | Fort Point

My concern is that this type of over-designed space never gets maintained. It will be a dump in 10 years.

A very real concern, guess it depends on the maintenance budget and who is in control of maintaining it

I know on the state/dcr side of how things work that its easy to get money for capital projects but there's almost no alotment for maintenance, its a very backwards system based off bids and etc.

There is a webcam for Martin's Park, which reveals its complexity. Scroll down.

Cronin and 150 Seaport contributed monies to Martin's Park. It should not be that difficult for the city to create an endowment for maintenance of this park, securing funds for such from Seaport developers. For example, Harvard is paying for the first ten years of maintenance for the Mellone Park (Library Park) that Harvard built off N. Harvard St. Melloone park is the park with the granite carved lions, of still mysterious origin.

A $5 million endowment would generate a minimum of $200,000 a year for maintenance.

There is indeed a $5M endowment for the park and 2 full-time employees, good planning by the City here.

Wow! I had no idea that part of Martin's Park, nearer to the Children's Museum, is actually part of a roof above some sort of structure, restrooms, offices, maintainance, perhaps? Unless I'm seeing this wrong, looking at the webcam, it really is built up above a structure. If you go to the menu, you'll be given the option to view the photo album which shows what I'm talking about. This is no ordinary playground, no wonder it's taken so long to build. I'm impressed!

I believe it's for bathrooms and storage. They had (have?) the plan drawn out on one of the fences. It's been a while since I've been around the area though so I may be remembering incorrectly.

Wow, 2 full time employees? In that case, hopefully one of them will be there for security against vandalism, etc. It's going to be such a nice park that it would be a real shame if things get damaged beyond normal wear and tear from use.

Yeah some of it, I believe, is back of the house for the children's museum (and or maybe a group entrance, for buses?) That institutional connection should help ensure good upkeep too fwiw

I'm pretty sure it's just a storage area. It doesn't connect to the building.

Got an email a few days ago that the Grand Opening will be June 15th.

I had heard there would be a garage for parking for a couple employees (presumably executives).

Edit: From Google Streetview it looks like much more than just storage.

I could find no indication of restrooms/offices only doors to utility rooms. It's currently used for parking, but it could be intended for a marshaing area for groups getting on and off buses. The group entrance to the Childrens Museum is just around the corner.

Still no bridge in place.

I took my kids to Chicago last month over April break and we went to the Maggie Daley Park which is adjacent to Millennium Park. I was wowed at what an incredible park for kids it was with numerous slides/play structures etc. It was 42 degrees and cloudy and the park was packed with kids. Looks like this could be something similar on a smaller scale. Perfect location for it too.

Yes, it was Friday. I'm a little slow with my posts these days. Thanks for the heads-up about the GO. Should be a ZOOOOOOOO!

Thanks for the pics, Beeline. This looks great, a real asset to the growing neighborhood. I'll definitely be taking my son here. He loves the tiny park at the end of Fan Pier; he'll just lose it when he sees this.

Looking good. Reminds me of a mini Brooklyn Bridge park
