Newton Infill and Small Developments

You're right, but why isn't the street sign in that picture white, like every other Brookline street sign?
Some of the signs on Route 9 are green, probably because they were put there by DOT and not by the town.

“Plans call for a 6-story 40B multifamily development featuring roughly 200 residential units.”

I can't confirm this with any opening day photos or anything, but the former General Cinema building (27 Boylston) in Chestnut Hill looks to be opening its new stores:

It will always be General Cinema to me:

Great news , but that headline writer!!!!!! 259 is "nearly 300"??" That's a bit stretchy.

I'm surprised by the approval of such massive project, given how Newton is quite "conservative" about preserving identity & cohesiveness.
I guess all that goes away when the promise of "property tax collection" appears quite attractive to the city coffers...

It also gets the city over the 40B "safe harbor" threshold, no?
Not sure if it's this one, but yeah, Newton has cleared the threshold now.

Dunstan East probably did it, since there are cores rising there now.

“A historic bank building in West Newton could soon become a bustling home to a new restaurant and apartments.

Mark Development is proposing to build a five-story, 50-unit mixed-use addition to the back of the former Santander Bank at 1314 Washington St. The bank — built in 1915 as the West Newton Savings Bank and listed on the National Register of Historic Places — would be preserved and renovated as a restaurant with outdoor seating.”

“106 River Street is an approved 9-unit development in West Newton, walking distance to the commuter rail. Unit sizes range between 1,656 square feet and 2,518 square feet with 2 and 3 bed layouts with 1 and 2 surface parking spaces.”

Both look great for their respective locations.

Three reasons why I'm particularly excited about 1314 Washington Street:

1) that bank building being restored as a restaurant with outdoor seating is an aesthetic (BackBay styling and mansard roof!) grandslam.
2) 50+ units behind it (a little version of 60 Killmarnock in the Fenway area) urbanizes that area nicely
3) It's a mere (and straightshot/contiguous/safe) 4 minute walk to the West Newton Commuter rail

.

Yea I agree. I also believe 100% that the best way to combat nimbys is to build nice things. Both of these projects are an upgrade to what is there now and make newton a nicer place. If you keep building attractive buildings that blend in to their existing environment while making the place around them a better place its hard to be upset about it. When some ugly offset window boxy building with weird colors goes up its much easier to be angry about it.
