DCR SETS PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS
NONANTUM ROAD IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has scheduled a public meeting on Wednesday evening, June 18, from 6:30-9 p.m., in the Watertown Free Public Library, to discuss preliminary designs for the Nonantum Road Improvements Project.
Under a $230,000 contract with DCR, the design firm of Fay, Spofford & Thorndike will provide design services to implement the recommended improvements contained in the June 2006 Nonantum Road Improvements Traffic Study Report. The project will involve reconstructing slightly more than a mile of Nonantum Road in Newton and Watertown. Work will consist primarily of survey, demolition, civil and structural work, intersection improvements, landscape design, and multi-use pathway development along the 5,500 feet between Charlesbank Road in Newton and Galen Street in Watertown. Design proposals include reducing the roadway to provide a single travel lane in each direction with left turn lanes at major intersections, and providing landscape enhancements to separate the recreational path from the parkway to increase pedestrian safety.
"The community has known for years that safety improvements are needed for Nonantum Road,? said State Senator Steven Tolman. ?I am excited that we now have the designs and we can move forward with this project."
State Representative Peter J. Koutoujian said, ?I look forward to working with DCR as we move one step closer toward making this road safer for the residents of Watertown and Newton.?
The improvements were recommended in the April 2002 Master Plan for the Charles River Basin. The study to examine Nonantum Road improvements was completed by Fay, Spofford & Thorndike in June 2006. Public meetings over the course of both the Master Plan and the Study indicated broad support for this project.
